Daylight Saving Set To End On November 1

On Sunday, Nov. 1 at 2 a.m., clocks in Santa Clarita are scheduled to “fall back” one hour as Daylight Saving Time (DST) makes its exit for the year.

According to the United States Department of Transportation, DST was first introduced by Germany during World War I (WWI) to extend daylight hours, conserving power and fuel. The United States chose to implement DST nationally during WWI.

After the war, states were allowed to decide whether to keep or ban DST until 1966, when the Department of Transportation implemented DST nationally once again, with transition dates set by law, according to the Department of Transportation.

Every state except Hawaii and Arizona is required to observe DST each year unless changes are approved by the Secretary of Transportation, says the Department of Transportation’s website.

California Assembly Bill No. 7 (AB 7), introduced on Dec. 3 of 2018, set to implement daylight saving year-round in California with the approval of the federal government. The bill was passed unanimously by the Assembly, the Assembly’s Utilities and Energy Committee and the Assembly’s Governmental Organization Committee.

However, the California Senate never voted on the bill, meaning the bill is now stalled. Even if the Senate were to pass the bill, it would then need to be approved by the federal government.

For the time being, residents of Santa Clarita will need to remember to change their clocks semi-annually.
