DMV Announces Another Extension On Expiring Commercial Driver’s Licenses

This new installment in a series of extensions now validates expiring licenses through February 2022 in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Commercial driver’s licenses, learner’s permits, endorsements and special certificates expiring between March 2020 and February 2022, are automatically extended through Feb. 28, 2022, according to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

The previous extension was set to expire on Nov. 30, 2021 and law enforcement has been notified of this new extension. Drivers should still plan on renewing their licenses at the soonest possible time, either in person at a DMV office or online.

This extension does not require you to get a new physical driver’s license and participants should not expect to receive anything by mail.

This new period of grace does not include commercial driver medical certifications, which must remain up-to-date, which does include medical certification.

For new and hopeful drivers, under the extension/waiver, commercial learner’s permit holders may take the commercial driver’s license skills test without waiting the usual 14 days after the initial issuance of the permit. That condition is in effect until the end of February, the same expiration date as the commercial driver’s licenses.

The DMV offers commercial driver’s license tests at 23 locations across the state, with additional Saturday testing appointments available at select locations. The DMV is also reportedly training more staff to conduct these tests to significantly expand testing capacity and appointment availability.

“Most DMV tasks do not require an office visit. The DMV encourages all customers to use its online services, expanded virtual services, and other service channels to complete transactions, including eligible driver’s license and vehicle registration renewals. Customers can also use the Service Advisor on the DMV website to complete DMV tasks,” said the DMV pressroom.
