DMV Offers Additional Extensions On Drivers Licenses During COVID-19

The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is offering additional extensions on driver licenses due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additional extensions offered to noncommercial driver licenses and permits are being offered to Californians with intent to give residents the opportunity to delay or avoid a DMV office visit during the pandemic.

The extensions are broken into four separate categories.

For drivers aged 70 and older with a noncommercial license that expires in June or July are set to receive a 120-day temporary extension.

“The DMV had previously announced a 120-day extension for licenses expiring in March, April and May, and the DMV is further extending licenses expiring in March to be valid through July 31, 2020. California,” reads an official statement issued by the DMV Friday.

No action by the individuals is said to be necessary, and they are expected to receive a paper license in the mail.

Drivers 69 and younger with a noncommercial license between March and July are set to receive a temporary extension through July 31, 2020.

“While the extension is automatic, drivers 69 and younger will not receive a new card or an extension in the mail,” Friday’s statement reads. “As an option, these drivers can request a free temporary paper extension online through DMV’s Virtual Field Office to document their extension, though one is not needed to drive.”

Californians who previously requested an extension through May 31, 2020, are eligible to submit a new request to document the new date.

Driver license permits that expire in July or August are “extended six months or to a date 24 months from the date of application, whichever is earlier.”

All commercial licenses, endorsements and learner’s permits that expire between March and June are said to “remain valid through June 30, 2020, to align with federal guidance,” according to DMV officials.

Select DMV offices have reopened to the public to serve customers with appointments and process transactions that can only be accomplished in an office.

The Virtual Field Office, which allows customers to upload documents, provide an e-signature (if required) and pay associated fees with an e-check to accomplish tasks that previously required an office visit, builds on the other online services already available to DMV customers here, including eligible driver license and vehicle registration renewals.

The DMV continues to provide essential services via mail, online, kiosks, call centers, available business partners and virtually to process critical transactions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Customers can use the Services Advisor on the DMV website to learn their options to complete DMV tasks.

  1. How about drivers license for turning 70 years old in June 2, 2020 will they have to take a test or are they extended too

  2. How we can make appointment for behind wheel test ?? Because phone not answer!!can we go walk in to office???

  3. My license expired December 16.2019 and driver safety required me to get a doctor certificate and I did and i was given an appointment for behind the wheel test that expires March 30, 2020, I was not able to take the test due to covid 19. My question is, will DMV send me notification for re appointment or do I need to apply for one, please give me advice on this matter.

  4. The article says DMVs “are set to” extend expiration deadlines. I’d wait for the written notice, if I hadn’t already renewed early (February for July renewal and Real ID). The 35 question written test is no big deal. Remember “point zero eight”. You’ll be fine.

  5. “All behind the wheel tests have been canceled at this time and no new drive test appointments are available. Please continue to check the DMV website for field office updates.”
