‘Evening of Remembrance’ To Honor Teens Killed In Crashes Takes On Virtual Format

The “Evening of Remembrance” is an annual event honoring and remembering Santa Clarita youth lost in traffic-related incidents. This year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and in accordance with LA County Department of Public Health orders, the event will premiere online on Sept. 15.

The Santa Clarita City Council is inviting residents to watch the event from home beginning at 7 p.m. and featuring prerecorded remarks and performances from the Youth Grove at Central Park.

The Youth Grove is a half-acre area dedicated to remembering the young lives lost in traffic-related incidents with 115 individual pillars that symbolize cut tree stumps and a life cut short. Each pillar is dedicated to a SCV individual who lost their life.

The online event is expected to include a performance of “Amazing Grace” by Chloe Villamayor and Peter Walsh from the SCV Youth Orchestra, and a song by Kenny Chesney titled “Who You’d Be Today,” that will be signed in American Sign Language by Ashley Burkhart.

Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth is scheduled to speak, and a “Forever Young” slideshow presentation will honor each individual whose name is in the Youth Grove will follow.

Alice Renolds, whose two sons are honored in the Youth Grove, and Riley Blaugrund, a West Ranch student, will also deliver some remarks.

The event can be viewed live through the City’s Facebook page, Youtube channel or Youth Grove Website here. The video premier can also be viewed any time after the conclusion of the premier through the same channels.
