Free Meals Being Given Out For The 2022-23 Academic School Year

Free meals are now being given to all school-aged students in the state, including Santa Clarita due to the Universal Meal Program being signed into law last year.

Every student from grades TK-12 is set to receive two free meals that include breakfast and lunch regardless of family income throughout the state and Santa Clarita.

California has now become the first state in the country to implement a statewide universal meal program.

“It used to be you needed to fill out an application to get free meals, but they felt that was too intrusive,” said Joe Messina, A Hart Board member. “But if we don’t have the applications, we don’t get properly reimbursed.”

The meal program is part of Assembly Bill (AB) 130 which was signed into law in 2021 by Governor Gavin Newsom.

“AB 130 establishes a California Universal Meals Program with changes to the state meal mandate and new requirements for high poverty schools to apply for a federal provision, such as the Community Eligibility Provision or Provision 2,” officials with the California Department of Education told Fox 11 LA.

The department says nutritious meals are a key pillar to help students thrive, said a Fox 11 article.

Studies show that kids who went on to take exams without being fed showed lower scores and may have been more prone to repeating a grade level, according to Feeding America.

“Children need nutrients so they can grow, develop and focus on learning instead of thinking about the food they need,” said officials with Feeding America.

The free lunches are provided to public school districts, county offices of education and charter schools.

  1. Here we go again. Democrats giving giving giving. Under Newsome and endorsed by Biden we’re spending millions on unnecessary free meals. Parents need to make their lunches. No excuse. Get a job, work for your handouts.

  2. Open up your heart to people who need help.

    • People have help already. Poor get EBT cards. They don’t need free lunches. A parents first obligation is to feed their kids. Now they will use their EBT money to buy things that we did not agree to pay for. It’s nice that middle class can be included but like every excessive welfare program….it does more harm than good.

  3. The faded old fashioned way people who needed help was to grow a packet of vegetable/fruit seeds, collect cans/bottles, cut lawns, wash cars, throw newspapers, work at businesses doing whatever, etc., etc.! There was an old fashioned thing called real Pride, hard work & assimilation!

  4. Most people work hard. You’re looking at the past with rose-colored glasses, I think. Lots of people mow lawns, clean houses, collect recyclables, stand in the sun selling flowers, etc etc and some have two jobs while caring for their elderly parents as well as their children.
I don’t resent helping people because that’s where humanity shines.

  5. Many people work very hard. Some have two jobs, but the pay is low. Some care for their elderly parents as well as their children. Some people stand in the sun selling flowers, or doing yard work. People work at car washes and clean houses, or babysit. There have always been some lazy people in the world…whether it’s 1950 or 2022. But I would rather focus on the good.
Now let’s make sure no child goes hungry and be a state of caring people, not critical, jaded people who only bring us all down.
