A viral video spreading across social media reportedly shows a fruit vendor getting harassed by a couple in Canyon Country.

The couple, who have been identified as Bergie’s Bar And Grill owners Renee McAlonis and Mike Foster, claimed the fruit stand was “illegal” and wanted the vendor to leave the area.
“This isn’t the f***ing ghetto, it needs to go,” Foster said to the fruit vendor in the video.
After confronting the vendor, Foster sits down further pressing to see if the vendor was able to operate.
“Where’s your health permit? Where’s your resale permit? Prove you pay taxes,” Foster said to the vendor.
Foster further repeats, “it needs to go, it needs to go.”
“This is crazy, I’d never thought I would experience this first hand,” the vendor said in the video.
When reached for comment, the vendor of La Palma Fresh Fruit who wished not to be named, felt scared in the moment when the couple started the verbal tirade.
“The lady said we couldn’t sell because we didn’t pay taxes and because we were from Mexico,” said the niece of the vendor who was translating. “We had water to have customers wash their hands, and they(McAlonis) threw it on the ground.”
The vendor said he will not be deterred by this incident and is planning on going back to the same area Monday afternoon — just down the street from the previous location.
In response to the viral video, many have taken to social media and review sites such as Yelp.
The Bergie’s Yelp page has been flooded with negative reviews, prompting the site to have a warning for “unusual activity.”
An attempt for comment from Foster was unanswered as of Monday afternoon.

More people need to be active to get this vendors off the streets not just in Santa Clarita but in all parts of Los Angeles. This is so very sad to me. Bergies was my favorite dive bar with great food, in spite of it’s unique clientele. I just can’t believe that owners would be so mean especially during these tough times when we are all just trying to make a living to support our families. The vendor handled himself in a classy fashion and I hope the see Las Palmas around town so I can give them my full support!!

I’ve never met the husband, but I think it’s a good thing, because if he ever pulled that attitude with me, I’d take him out myself and teach him a thing a bit harsher than he’d be prepared for! Bergie’s is a scummy place and has been known as a shithole for YEARS! First and only time we went there we were blown away that such a lowlife dive like that has been there for as long as it has! The woman owner was really rude and in-accommodating. We went for dinner, and the place was PACKED with noisy, completely drunk patrons. Kind of amazing considering for a half-hour, nobody came around to even take our drink order! I went to the bar to order a couple drinks, and never even got them since the bartender was such an airhead, she had couldn’t get her act together! The music was SO loud, you couldn’t hear yourself think, the drunk people even louder! I called for the manager, and the woman Renee was so rude to us, we walked out in a huff, vowing to never return (and we never have)! And that’s been a few years ago! We couldn’t believe such a lowlife bar like that was in our neighborhood! So it was really ironic that I read here the owner was not happy with the Mexican vendor for bringing the ‘Ghetto’ here, considering THEY ARE the Ghetto there, themselves! Talk about the pot calling the kettle black! They should get rid of the Ghetto vibe here by closing Bergie’s permanently! Thinking about how every night they keep serving alcohol until you run out of money scares the heck outta me! It would make the town a lot safer, that’s for sure! They have the nerve to be questioning anyone about legality…driving around drunk, acting all ghetto and causing a scene. How embarrassing. Worry about yourself and keep your own damned nose clean.
We need to be honest about the whole situation. The insults to the vendor is 100% wrong. If the owner’s of Bergie’s didn’t like the unlicensed vendor on the street, it is their right; however they handled it wrong. The should have called authorities and filed a complaint.
I myself don’t mind the vendor on the street because I prefer that vendor who is trying to make a living and feed their family verses the guy on the street selling drugs.
I hope the owner’s of Bergie’s ask themselves what is worst, selling fruit or harassing and insulting people.
As a Santa Clarita community we should respect one another, and let authorities handle disputes.
My mother lives in Echo Park and there are several vendors on the street especially at night. At night time, the community walks the streets of Sunset Blvd., feeling safe because there are several vendors and people gathering just to walk on a beautiful night, and enjoy some delicious food.
Whats the issue? And if you say its, “ghetto”? explain how? Cant be any worse than all these WHITE homeless people in orange county begging for money. It would actually be nice if they got them selves a fruit cart and TRIED doing something themselves!
The more the demographics of the SCV and the country change, you will see more trash like this acting up.
I moved to the SCV 30 years ago and quickly noticed a skinhead presence. Me and half a dozen friends quickly mobilized and started cruising the SCV doing what we called ”skinhead hunting”. In those days they openly wore their Nazi attire in public and we preyed on this trash until they went underground.
This trash is foolish for trying to fight a war against demographics…that’s like trying to fight a war against the sun, wind and rain, you will NEVER win and may just catch a brutal beat down for your efforts.

Santa Clarita is a predominantly white and as the influx of minorities grows we will see high tension being exposed in the bubble of Santa Clarita.
I kind of agree with you, unfortunately. See it all the time. Too-entitled and spoiled acting. I’ve lived here for more than 20 years myself. I have a different take on it and that is that since it always HAS been a predominately white town, it’s tough to see these other people moving here, bringing their social ills with them, and bringing everything down with them. It’s not so much that we resent people of other colors, but folks spent a lot of money moving here to try to escape the very things we are seeing more and more often now, and it’s frustrating. We feel encroached upon! Property values drop, and neighborhoods become more un-safe. I think most homeowners would say they’re disappointed about the increasing homeless problem here, and think considering how much we spend to live here, they should take care of this and let us live the nice, clean, upper-class life we moved here and paid for. Have to say the graffiti removal here is the shining star of it all, getting rid of it as fast as it goes up, and I know we all appreciate that! ? Sad thing, though, is that it IS quickly becoming SFV 2. Folks who hated living there will get tired of the same deal here, and feel the need to move once again, if, for only a few years, to get away from the things we hated to see growing up. as all we want is to want better for our kids than we had, right?!
I agree with you. Also why is it that businesses have to shut down to protect us but vendors and food carts don’t!
Also who is monitoring the social distancing? Food carts with big gallons of mayo to sell corn. These vendors are a health risk, Mexican or not. Be respectful and just quietly call the sheriff.
My understanding is face coverings are now Required while in public areas including outdoors where you may encounter anyone outside your household. Why weren’t the Bergie’s owners wearing one as they came close the to fruit vendor? They too were breaking the law. Were they given a warning as well? The Bergies owners were interviewed and surprisingly they were wearing a mask for TV. Are masks not required in public in SCV cities?
Sounds like a topic for City Council and sheriff dept. Volunteer police can drive around and verify and enforce. Print a flyer to give to vendors to Not go on Private Property and how to get permit. Make sure Volunteer speaks Spanish please.

I don’t see any racism in this case. We really need to have a health department license to run any business. How do they pay taxes without a license? I have a business and paying too much taxes. We don’t have any problem for the people who run the business on the street but everyone has to follow the rules! Other people are taking this matter to the other side to fulfilled their own problems. Pls FOLLOW THE RULES! If these people run the businesses without the license why would we need the license to run the business? They make money in cash and don’t even pay the taxes!!! Renee and mike have jobs – they own a pub. They don’t work for the health district, ICE, IRS, or any other city/state/federal entity that grants them the authority to ask others for their papers or proof of taxes. Business licenses are usually supposed to be posted somewhere, if I’m not mistaken, but maybe laws are different for food trucks/mobile businesses. (I don’t carry my biz license with me when working at different business sites.) their concern might have been valid, but there are proper reporting channels. They could have expressed their concerns (politely), asked to see something that showed they were safe food handlers, and asked for Contact information so they could report appropriately. Trying to intimidate by posturing and swearing didn’t help resolve the situation; it only soured attitudes – and not only those directly involved. It’s not hard to communicate concern respectfully and the results are almost always better in the long run.
I do not know if the vendors had or didn’t have a license, but for those of you concerned that the two bar owners are just good citizens doing the right thing trying to report a crime, you should know that they had been reported by previous employees for HIRING ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, paying them less than the minimum wage, having them work under horrible conditions and threatening to call ICE if they complain.
The owner of the business, Renee McAlonis also had previous criminal charges for DUI, and was arrested for drug possession and carrying a loaded weapon at an airport.
And for those of you who can’t see the obvious racial bias here, also know that the bar has previously hosted KKK themed events and the owners are openly racist on their social media. Renee even managed to get a black person arrested with insufficient evidence.
So now my question is, now that it has been proven that these people are just white trash that dont abide by the rules, are we entitled to treat them with the same hatred and disrespect that they treated a person for trying to sell fruit?
