GoFundMe Set Up For Val Verde Family After Fire Destroys Home

A Val Verde family has set up a GoFundMe after a fire destroyed their home and killed nine of their animals last week.

On Tuesday, Jan. 5, first responders received reports of a structure fire in the 29800 block of Central Avenue in Val Verde, according to Fire officials.

The fire was reported just before 5 a.m. as a result of a faulty water heater, said Christy Sims, a resident of the house.

“The heater blew right through the roof, killing our four cats and five dogs,” Sims said.

Sims lives at the house with her husband Vance Sims, as well as Ellyn Forman, who is the owner of the house.

As a result of the fire, Sims and her husband and the Formans have been displaced due to the fire.

The two families have set up a GoFundMe to help replace the contents of the home, according to Sims.

“The insurance will pay to fix the house, but all personal possessions will not be replaced or the contents in the house,” Sims said.

The Sims and Forman families are asking for any donations possible during this tough time.

“Neither are working right now due to the virus so they are really in a bad way now,” wrote Christy’s sister Janice Sims Shelton in the GoFundMe. “I know everyone is having a hard time during this pandemic, but I’m asking everyone that can to help them.”

The GoFundMe had raised just over $1,300 as of Friday afternoon.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
