Great California ShakeOut Drill Conducted On KHTS Radio

Santa Clarita Mayor Pro Tem Laurene Weste hosted the Great California Shakeout Drill Thursday morning on KHTS Radio to remind Santa Clarita residents of how to respond during an earthquake.

Conducted each year to help train the community on how to properly drop cover and hold during a temblor, several Santa Clarita businesses and schools practiced a drill on Thursday with an additional on-air drill hosted by KHTS Radio.

“Today is the Great California ShakeOut and by taking part, you are joining millions of Californians in the largest earthquake drill in U.S. history,” Weste said. “Being prepared for a natural disaster, like an earthquake, is vitally important for the resilience of our community.”

Santa Clarita’s Mayor Pro Tem Weste led the on-air broadcast that showcased sounds of an earthquake alongside directions for listeners to follow if they weren’t in the process of driving.

Weste advised listeners to drop, cover and hold on throughout the duration of the rumbling while covering one’s own head with their arm.

Listeners were encouraged to hold the position until the ground stops and it is safe to move, or in this case, the earthquake sounds subside.

Drills across Santa Clarita are annually held during the Great California ShakeOut as an opportunity for the community to review emergency preparedness plans and supplies, according to officials.

Anyone visiting a City facility, including a Santa Clarita Library branch, City Hall or the Newhall and Canyon Country Community Centers had been encouraged to take part in the drill, according to City officials.

City officials recommend residents avoid standing in a doorway for safety during an earthquake, as injury can occur from swinging doors, according to officials.
