Hart High Mom Organizes Community Efforts To Make Over 7,000 ‘Saugus Strong’ Ribbons

In the wake of Thursday’s Saugus High shooting, one mother from Hart High rallied the community on social media to help make and distribute over 7,000 ribbons for the “Saugus Strong” vigil on Sunday.

Tiffany Hernandez was on Facebook Friday when she saw a woman attempting to organize Saugus High students in an effort to make ribbons for Sunday’s Saugus Strong vigil.

“I thought, ‘There’s got to be a way to get the students at all the schools involved,’’ Hernandez said. “So I went down to L.A. and got all of the ribbon that I could.”

After gathering “hundreds of yards” of ribbon, Hernandez took to social media and asked for the community’s help to create the Saugus Strong ribbons.

“I saw it on Facebook,” said Marcia Davis, a retired instructional assistant at Saugus High School who helped assemble the ribbons. “Those four hours where I went and helped were purely therapeutic. It just gave me a sense of being able to say I participated in something.”

The ribbons are blue on the outside to represent Saugus High, while the inside is orange to represent mass shootings in a more general sense, according to Hernandez.

“I just really hope that the community continues to rally and support each other,” Hernandez said. “The more positive outlooks we have on a day-to-day basis, the better our world can be.”

After two days of work, and with the help of many volunteers, Hernandez was able to produce over 7,000 Saugus Strong ribbons.

“This community never ceases to amaze me,” Hernandez said.

The ribbons were passed out during the Saugus Strong vigil on Sunday, as well as Hart High School, Walgreens and several local fire stations.

“When I walked around that park, almost everyone was wearing a ribbon,” Davis said. “Being able to hand these ribbons out and talk to people and hear their stories was absolutely unbelievable.”

Hernandez said that she still had the supplies to make approximately 2,000 more ribbons for anyone who may want one.

“As long as people are asking for them, I’ll keep making them until my fingers fall off,” Hernandez said.
