Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Now Accepting Applicants For Diabetes Prevention Program

In honor of National Diabetes Awareness Month, Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital is set to offer its diabetes prevention program to qualified participants who feel they are at risk for diabetes.

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital is set to offer its diabetes prevention program, known as the Prevent T2 National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), to qualified participants at risk for diabetes in honor of National Diabetes Awareness Month.

DPP is a “lifestyle change program that helps those who are at risk of developing diabetes reduce their blood sugar, lose weight, and reverse prediabetes,” according to Henry Mayo officials.

For the DPP, throughout the year, participants will be on a year-long journey with others in the program as well as a lifestyle coach that will instruct and guide you on how to prevent diabetes and live a happy and healthy life, according to officials.

DPP participants are set to join a supportive group led by dietitians, diabetes educators, nurses and health educator experts, according to officials.

“A lot of people are walking around not knowing that they are pre-diabetic,” Lilly Novak, community outreach coordinator for Henry Mayo, said. “Many do not realize they are pre-diabetic because they are experiencing any symptoms or not going to the doctor at all.”

Prediabetes may have no symptoms. The risk factors for prediabetes:

  • 45 years of age or older
  • Overweight
  • Family history of type 2 diabetes
  • Are physically active less than three times per week
  • Have been diagnosed with gestational diabetes during pregnancy

Common symptoms can vary but often are reported as: being thirsty, going to the restroom often and being overweight.

Henry Mayo has offered the program for three years, “helping scores of participants lose weight and reduce their risk of developing diabetes,” according to officials.

The program is set to begin in January 2022. Space is limited so applicants are encouraged to enroll in the program early.
