As the Fourth of July approaches, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station is guiding residents on how to properly report illegal fireworks.

Illegal fireworks can be reported by calling the non-emergency business line at the station 661-255-1121 or through the City’s Resident Service Center, according to Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Station.

“Residents need to be aware that if fireworks are reported through the Resident Service Center that it won’t result in a deputy being immediately dispatched,” Miller said. “The system is used  to predictively map out addresses in identifying problem areas for patrol to give attention.”

Through the “Illegal Fireworks” category in the City of Santa Clarita Resident Service Center (RSC), residents can report locations that have been problem areas for illegal fireworks in past years. This information will be automatically transmitted to the Sheriff’s Department so they can enter it into their database and know where they should focus their patrols.

This information gathered will be used to “predictively” map out problem areas of concern for law enforcement efforts, according to the City.

The Resident Service Center is accessible on the City’s website and through the Santa Clarita Mobile App.

“As we get closer to the Fourth of July holiday, many residents are concerned about the fire danger and loud explosions that come from illegal firework use,” said Mayor Cameron Smyth. “We are once again monitoring our Resident Service Center, where community members can pinpoint and submit exact locations where fireworks are being set off.”

In Santa Clarita, fireworks are a violation of the Santa Clarita Municipal Code, Health and Safety Code and Los Angeles County Fire Code, according to the City.

“Our first responders have been through so much these past few months, as our entire community has,” said Mayor Smyth. “Let’s not add any extra burden to our emergency room workers, firefighters and other first responders by using illegal fireworks that can cause burns, injuries and destructive fires.”

When reporting fireworks, the officials ask callers to be as specific as possible to the possible location of the fireworks.

Calling 9-1-1 should be used only for emergency situations, such as if a fire is ignited or someone has been injured.

On July 4, there will be personnel specifically tasked with handling calls for service regarding firework calls.

Fines for violators start at $500 for possession, use or allowing fireworks, according to Miller.
