Identity Theft Awareness Week: Protect Your Personal Information

It’s Identity Theft Awareness Week, and experts are offering tips to protect your private information all year round.

Between Jan. 30 and Feb. 3, the IRS, FTC and their partners are offering resources for everyone to aid in avoiding and recovering from identity theft and spotting scams.

Identity theft happens when someone uses your personal or financial information—such as your Social Security number or financial account information—without your permission, according to the FTC.

This year’s events include webinars, podcasts and other activities. Participants will hear from experts from the FTC and its Identity Theft Awareness Week partners, including AARP, Consumer Action, the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC), the IRS, the Maryland Library for the Blind and Print Disabled, the Small Business Administration, and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The week is scheduled to end on Feb. 3 with a podcast discussion with college students about financial aid scams, job scams, and other tactics identity thieves use to steal personal information.
