The SCVi program held multiple different Summer Arts Programs across their iLEAD school sites and programs.
Fifty-two youth from 2nd grade through 8th grade were able to participate in the summer programs led by 24 youth workers, many of which are current upper school SCVi learners and alumni.
“They learn time management, collaboration, responsibility, problem-solving, public speaking and adaptability. This is great prep for all they will encounter in the future,” said iLEAD Arts Coordinator Sara McDaniels. “We were thrilled to offer this important summer program at no charge to our learners, ensuring that the benefits of arts learning remain accessible to all.”
The youth posted five sold-out performances of The Enchanted Bookshop on July 22 through 24 directed by Ceron Jones, the musical theatre facilitator at iLEAD Lancaster. Sets were built by SCVi alums Sam Fitzgerald and Sam Salters, and iLEAD SCVi Facilitator David Acensio was on staff as well.
In addition to producing the play, learners also received weekly instruction in West African Drumming and Dance from Cal Arts instructor Yeko Ladzekpo-Cole.
The program was not only available in Santa Clarita but in other locations such as iLEAD Antelope Valley and iLEAD Lancaster.
Many of the students were able to engage in the arts during the summer, and one parent said her child is often shy in public, but had exhibited creative and theatrical aptitude at home after the program. “I’m grateful for this opportunity that allowed my child and others to push themselves and grow in this amazing environment,” Shara said.
McDaniels said she hopes to continue summer arts opportunities for iLEAD learners in summers to come. “The Arts is in the iLEAD name and in our DNA,” said McDaniels. “It’s what we do.”
