Impact Of Canyon Country Landslide Grows Larger As One Additional Home Receives ‘Yellow Tag’

A Canyon Country landslide between Terri Drive and Trestles Drive has displaced an additional family, totaling five homes which have received “yellow tags.”

Geologists are conducting a survey on the hillside to determine if the residents are able to return to their homes full-time, according to Carrie Lujan, spokesperson for the City of Santa Clarita.

“City staff are out their daily to monitor the slide,” said Lujan. “Everybody is working together to make sure the area is safe.”

Lujan added that the two homeowners associations on each side of the slide have contracted a team of geologists to survey the damage.

Five Yellow Tags, Two HOAs, One Landslide

There are two homeowners associations on both sides of the landslide: GM Management, which manages American Beauty Classics, and Property Management Professionals (PMP), which oversees The Trestles.

Five homes have received “yellow tags” as a result of the landslide, which means residents can only enter their homes during the day.

Three homes on the 26800 block of Trestles Drive have been impacted, as well as two homes near the 19700 block of Terri Drive in American Beauty, according to City officials.

The families in these homes are currently staying in temporary housing and hotels, waiting for the “all clear” from the geologists surveying the area.

Geological Survey

The initial grading of the hillside was approved in 2005, after City staff reviewed the development plans for the Trestles neighborhood.

But management of the slope is the responsibility of the homeowners association, according to City Engineer Mike Hennawy.

Each HOA has contracted independent companies to conduct a geological survey to determine the safety and cause of the landslide.

When reached for a statement, Mike Moses, vice president of GM Management said, “No comment,” but confirmed the company is doing a geological survey.

Moses added the management company is in contact with the residents impacted by the slide.

A homeowner of American Beauty called the association for Trestles, PMP Management, to notify them of the slide, which was on the border of the two communities.

“PMP Management contacted the association’s landscaper to inspect the slope and install erosion mitigation measures,” said Brad Watson, president of PMP.

The goal of the survey is to identify the cause of the slope failure, mitigate additional movement and propose a long-term solution to repair the slopes, said Watson.

Both management companies and the City are waiting on the results of the geological survey to determine who is at cause for the landslide.
