L.A. County Board Rules Camp Scott To Reopen For Non-Serious Female Juveniles

On Tuesday, Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved a new motion for Camp Scott located in Santa Clarita to open their facilities to non-serious juvenile female offenders, despite their previous attempts to house serious male offenders.

On Tuesday, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a motion adopting a plan for the County Probation Department’s halls and camps, specifically as it relates to establishing Secure Youth Treatment Facilities following the transfer of juvenile serious offenders from state to county custody, according to officials.

The motion by Supervisors Lindsey P. Horvath and Janice Hahn directed the county’s Probation Department to develop a long-term plan that, among other things, is set to result in Camp Scott being the only county detention facility for all girls, young women and gender-expansive youth.

The new motion is set to reactivate Camp Scott in a way consistent with the site’s historical use, according to officials.

Camp Joseph Scott is located in the City of Santa Clarita on property owned by the County, which was temporarily closed during the Covid-19 pandemic and had its all-girls population transferred to Dorothy Kirby Center in Commerce.

The motion is set to open Camp Scott in a way consistent with the site’s historical use, added officials.

There is no plan to reopen Camp Kenyon Scudder, which is located on the same property and was closed by the county in 2019 due to issues related to its structural vulnerability, according to officials.

Although the Board of Supervisors had originally voted to approve Camp Scott as a permanent location for serious juvenile male offenders in March of 2022, Tuesday’s vote instead directs the Probation Department to designate a part of  Barry J. Nidorf Juvenile Hall located in Sylmar and Campus Kilpatrick in Malibu to house juvenile serious male offenders.

Dorothy Kirby Center is designated to permanently serve juvenile female serious offenders.

The City of Santa Clarita continues to keep the community informed of this crucial issue, officials said.

L.A. County Board Rules Camp Scott To Reopen For Non-Serious Female Juveniles

  1. I wonder what their definition of “Non-serious” is now? We already know a “juvenile” is now up to age 25 when it used to be under 18. Many previously described serious crimes including assault and battery, and manslaughter are now considered by Gascon to be “non-serious”

    • Juvenile is up to 18. However, juvenile offenders can be sentenced, and held, depending on their “achiever status” up to age 25, in what used to be call the California Youth Authority. Then, they graduate to be adult offenders going forward.

  2. The Liberals will keep reducing all crimes to Non-Serious to keep the criminals out of jail as well as increasing prices on everything that has to do with God’s blessings of fossil fuels!!

  3. Not ALL Liberals want to reduce serious crimes to less serious crimes.
Look into Ronald Reagan’s role in the handling of the mentally ill, if you’re interested in the full picture.

  4. Ann in Wonderland, Of course not, nothing is 100% except dying & taxes, but, enough Woke Liberals vote in Liberals to all aspects of government, schools, etc. that they’re ruining the USA! Look at Every Liberal run city & the schools!, facts/reality, that’s not opinion!
