L.A. County Junior Lake Lifeguard Program Reopens At Castaic Lake

After taking a pandemic-induced break in the summer of 2020, the Junior Lake Lifeguard Program is slated to be back up and running at Castaic Lake for youth ages 9-17 under new safety protocols for summer 2021.

“The Junior Lake Lifeguard program provides an opportunity like no other for youth to get outside again, partake in water activities and learn crucial lifesaving skills. Our incredible trained staff will ensure youth participants gain unique experiences and essential water safety knowledge that can be used throughout their lives, whether in situations helping others or in their careers as lifeguards,” said Norma E. García-González, Director, Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation in a statement released on Thursday April 15.

The L.A. County Department of Parks and Recreation (L.A. County Parks) announced Friday that the co-ed classes are expected to be available in three locations across L.A. County at Castaic Lake Recreation Area, Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park and Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area.

Overseen by eager and certified instructors, this is a great way for Santa Clarita’s youth to learn the importance of water safety and what to do in an emergency event. The lifeguard staff serve as mentors, emparting their experience and wisdom by “leading hands-on activities that introduce youth to water safety, athleticism, teamwork and a career in aquatics. Youth participants learn from various activities that range from first aid, CPR, rescue skills with paddleboards, rescue cans and more” said the statement released by LA County Parks.

To ensure the safety of staff and participants, 2021 class sizes are planned to be smaller and other COVID-19 safety protocols are set to be put into practice, including daily health screening, required face coverings for staff and students except for at appropriate times, physical distancing, and other basic health and safety practices.

The Junior Lake Lifeguards Program is a great opportunity for youth that may live a long distance from the coast, giving them a chance to learn about water safety, connect with their peers, and have a fun and educational time. Each location included in the program has easy access to local highways, making it more easily accessible and reducing travel time.

Registration for try-outs opens on Friday, April 16, 2021. Youth participants must try out for the program and they must pass to register. Try-outs for the Castaic Lake program are free and are scheduled to be held at the Castaic Aquatic Center Pool on Saturday April 24 and Sunday 25, and Saturday May 1. Pre-registration for these try-out sessions is mandatory.

After passing the try-outs, participants are eligible to register for any of the three 2-week sessions. Participants may sign up for full or half-day experiences, and sessions are planned to be offered the weeks of June 21 to July 1, July 12 to July 22, and July 26 to August 5, Monday through Thursday

Established in 1990, the L.A. County Parks Junior Lake Lifeguard Program has grown to host hundreds of kids every summer, teaching them life-saving skills necessary to become a real lifeguard. Past participants have used these skills in their careers as lifeguards or to provide life-saving first aid when the situation arose. Practical skills in water safety and rescue are vital skills for every person to have, and this program is a great opportunity to learn such skills.
