On Thursday, LA North Studios in Santa Clarita presented a job offer of stage manager to intern Jake Avizzu, who has autism and landed the opportunity through local nonprofit Yes I Can.
In celebration of National Disability Awareness Month, LA North Studios in Santa Clarita was honored for offering inclusive opportunities for those with disabilities, including Yes I Can Music and Education student Avvizu.
Avvizu realized he wanted to work for the film industry after joining YIC.
“I started learning all the fields that they covered,” Avvizu said. “It really drew me into what all the possibilities were.”
Avvizu interned for LA North Studios as a stage management intern for nearly six months through YIC’s Paid Internship Program.
The program matches those with disabilities with jobs in the entertainment industry. Students learn appropriate work behavior and interactions.
LA North Studios co-founders Anthony Syracuse and John Prabhu were struck by Avvizu’s enthusiasm while conducting interviews for the internship.
“Seeing his eyes light up and just his attitude is something you don’t see in people nowadays,” said Syracuse. “He’s definitely a part of the family, we just saw that with him right away.”
Avizzu is known as a favorite among employees at the studio.
“Jake is so wonderful,” said Prabhu. “It’s like he’s always been a member of the team. We’re super happy to have him.”
Many other students in YIC share some of Avizzu’s best qualities, according to officials with the nonprofit.
“I think Jake really embodies all the individuals in our program,” said Kirsten Fitzpatrick, Deputy Director of YIC. “He’s a team player, he’s extremely talented, learns very quickly, takes direction, shows up every day with a smile on his face, and is humble.”
Prabhu and Syracuse invited business owners to contact them if they have questions about creating opportunities for those with disabilities.
“Come see our operation and sit down with John and me,” Syracuse said, addressing other local employers. “It couldn’t have been a better experience.”
“I think as an employer, you have to keep an open mind,” Prabhu added. “They’re gonna surprise you and show you that they have great work ethic.”
Those who have disabilities shouldn’t be afraid to apply for opportunities, according to Avizzu.
“Being a person with disabilities myself, believe me, I felt the same way,” he said. “Nothing’s gonna happen if you just stand there, so you’ve gotta get out there.”
