Mother Of Five Revived After Overdose, Prompting Sheriff’s Plea To Fight Opioid Crisis

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station has issued a plea for community support against drug activity after a mother of five children suffered an opioid overdose.

On Thursday, August 23, a 36-year-old Santa Clarita mother of five overdosed on heroin, prompting a call to 9-1-1, according to Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the station.

Santa Clarita deputies arrived at the scene and administered Narcan, an anti-opiate drug commonly used in emergency overdose treatment. First responders managed to bring the mother back from the brink of death and quickly transported her to a hospital for medical care.

A nasal spray approved by the FDA in 2015, Narcan is the most common over-the-counter form of Naloxone, which is designed to rapidly reverse an opioid overdose, a life-saver for first responders, quite literally.

“This medication is our second, third and fourth line of defense against opioid overdoses,” said Dr. Clayton Kazan, medical director for the Los Angeles County Fire Department, in a previous story. “Our first line of defense is always assisting the breathing of patients.”

The anti-opiate drug can very quickly restore normal respiration to a person whose breathing has slowed or stopped as a result of overdosing on heroin or prescription opioid pain medications.

“Naloxone ‘fights’ for the opioid receptors in the brain,” explained Kazan. “The medication binds to receptors so the brain stops taking in the other opioids.”

Although her life was saved, the woman’s family did not go on unscathed by her overdose. Five young children, ranging in age from 4 months to 10 years, were taken by deputies and put into protective custody.

“It is our hope that this mother will get the assistance she needs, so she can be there for her children in the future,” Miller said.

The five children are currently under the care of the Department of Child and Family Services, according to officials

“SCV, we need your help. We can not battle the opioid crisis alone. Although a nationwide epidemic, you can help us make a powerful impact in Santa Clarita Valley,” Miller said. “It’s important that you encourage your loved ones to get the help they need.”

The Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station plans to expand the outreach of their J-Team in order to help those fighting addiction get into rehabilitation programs.

Additionally, other specialized law enforcement teams are also going after the “real suspects” in cases of addiction — the drug dealers, according to Sheriff’s officials.

“Drug dealers knowingly supply controlled substances to victims that they know could lead to addiction and overdose deaths,” Miller said.

To provide anonymous tips regarding suspected drug dealers in the area, use the www.LACrimeStoppers.org website or call 1-800-222-8477.

Anyone needing information on resources and getting help for drug addiction for themselves or loved ones can reach out to te members of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station J-Team by email at SantaClaritaJTeam@lasd.org.

“Join us in helping take a stand against drug addiction,” Miller said. “Together, we can start a ripple effect of positive change.”

  1. Can’t do a darn thing about drugs in a state that allows the sale of weed and provides safety for drug sellers.

  2. Heroin has been around for ages. In the 70’s it was widely used and the government attempted to fight against heroin. 2019 and they are still trying to stop the use of heroin amongst other drugs. My point is,…that drugs will always be around and so will drug dealers. If the drug addict wants his choice of drug…he/she is going to get it. The terrible issue behind this is that many patients (including myself) with chronic diseases, illness or pain are the ones that have to pay the price, because others are abusing it.

  3. She’ll get the assistance she needs in jail . At least then while she’s in jail our streets will have one less junkie. I feel bad for the children due to they’re the ones getting the worst of it but it is bull shit that society needs to pick up the tab on this junkie. I lost a 30+ year friend due to this drug but I don’t feel bad due to he chose to take the wrong path in life. We all told him to stop or its going to kill him . He didn’t listen .
