National Science Foundation Awards $646,000 Welding Grant To College Of The Canyons

The National Science Foundation has awarded College of the Canyons (COC) a $646,354 grant to fund a Welding Education Smart Technology (WEST) program on campus in Fall 2022.

Expected to launch next semester, the WEST project intends to integrate smart technology platforms — paired with industry-recognized stackable certificates — into the current welding curriculum.

“We are very excited to receive this grant from the National Science Foundation, which will allow our welding program to level-up,” said Harriet Happel, dean of career and technical education at COC.

The grant is expected to further the college’s existing welding technology lab by integrating state-of-the-art “smart” welding systems for more hands-on training time, instant assessment of welds, higher-quality training for technicians and improved safety, according to COC officials.

“The WEST project will help create a pipeline of skilled welders ready to meet the demands of Industry 5.0,” said Tim Baber, department chair of welding technology at the college. “We will be able to align the program curriculum to the same smart technology students will encounter in today’s workforce.”

Not only intended to establish foundational welding skills at the secondary school level, the WEST program has also been implemented to increase student enrollment, curriculum completion and attainment of industry-related credentials, according to school officials

Through the near $650,000 grant, approximately 300 students entering through traditional or dual-enrollment pathways are expected to fine-tune their skills.

“This grant from the National Science Foundation will allow us to expand equitable access to certificate pathways through flexible instruction delivery,” Baber said. “It is an exciting time for our welding program.”
