Women’s history month is almost over. In recognition of the celebration, KHTS spoke to women who work at the station about their roles and how other women have impacted their lives.
According to the Library of Congress, Women’s History Month originated in 1981 when Congress passed a resolution asking the sitting president to make the week of March 7, 1982 Women’s History Week.
Resolutions designating Women’s History Week continued to be passed each year until 1987, when a petition by the National Women’s History Project led to the establishment of March as Women’s History Month for that year, according to the Library of Congress.
Since then, presidents have proclaimed March Women’s History Month each year, as per the Library of Congress.
During the KHTS Women’s History Month video, station Co-Owner Jeri Seratti-Goldman spoke about her passion for radio, which she transformed into a career.
“I had worked at one of my dad’s radio stations part-time in the summer during college and fell in love and changed my major,” explained Seratti-Goldman. “I’ve been doing this for 42 years.”
KHTS News Director Jade Aubuchon emphasized the importance of recognizing women’s impact on society.
“You all have somebody in your life who is a woman who has made an impact on you,” Aubuchon said. “By acknowledging that from our city perspective, we’re able to really see how not only as individual people, but as a society, we’re shaped by those relationships and those women who mentor us.”
Barbara Cochran, co-host of “The Senior Hour” on KHTS, elaborated on why it is important for women to take chances and break barriers.
“Nothing ventured, nothing gained,” Cochran said. “If you don’t try something, how do you know whether or not you’re going to be successful or whether or not you’re going to be enjoying it?”
