Students around the country including in Santa Clarita are participating in a walkout to stand up against school shootings following the Uvalde Elementary attack.
In the days following the 19 elementary school students and two teachers from Robb Elementary school being killed by an active shooter, students from across the country including from our own Saugus High School are walking out of school to stand up against school violence, Hart District officials said.
“We are all mourning the terrible tragedy that took place earlier this week in Uvalde, Texas,” Hart District principals said in an email sent home to parents Wednesday. “We understand that each person deals with this type of tragedy in their own way, especially given our own experience in our community.”
Over 100 students from Saugus High School participated in the national movement for student protest activities related to the shooting in Uvalde, Texas that occurred earlier this week.
“Thursday, May 26, is a regular school day with normal educational activities taking place in each class period,” Hart District officials said.

Good on you students. Stand up, rise up, speak out and vote. Many of you will be 18 before the November mid-terms and certainly before the 2024 Presidential election. Demand action; not thoughts and prayers. Hey Republicans in the House and Senate, there is something deeply hypocritical about praying for a problem you are unwilling to resolve.

Many are or will be of voting age by election day. Register and vote as yours and your younger siblings lives depend on it. Talk to your parents too. Make sure they were understand where their legislators stand on issues such as gun safety by checking voting records, not speeches. As an example, our misrepresentative, Mike Garcia, has consistently voted against all measures promoting gun safety when most people favor changes. See the disconnect? Even though you may still be to young to vote you are still entitled to contact your elected officials. Do, and express your concerns.

Sorry to burst all of your bubbles but shootings will never stop when there are evil people in society whether its a school, a store, a church, or a movie theater. The best deterrent is to put at least 2 armed law enforcement personnel at each school. However there is something seriously wrong when an 18 year old can easily buy 2 automatic weapons and hundreds of rounds of ammo.

Bringing a gun on to a school campus is illegal. The school is now a gun free zone aka shooting gallery. When you took away the law abiding teachers’ rights to bring a gun or any other weapon on to the campus you turned them into defenseless targets like those at a shooting gallery.
If you think that making an illegal act more illegal by passing laws will stop a criminal who has no regard for law will stop him or her from committing such a crime you are wrong.

Hey roberta and mark – sorry to burst your bubbles – there was armed security at the school – and it was not a deterrant. The 18 year old kid wore body armor. The kid purchased the gun legally and was not a “criminal” until after his gun purchase , which facilitated him becoming a criminal by killing 20 people in an instant. Tell me that is not effed up in the worst possible way. This all needs to change. You are wrong mark, if you take away the ability to purchase an assault weapon, ghost gun, massive amounts of ammunition legally, you will stop the random wannabes and those that have snapped – you will have to crack down on black markets to take care of the rest, but it’s a start – and don’t our kids deserve a every adult’s efforts to put a stop to the insantity that only exists in America, at the very least? Laurie, I understand your frustration as I am frustrated with these shootings as well. My point is that making more laws won’t stop this from happening. There was a shooting at Santana High School in Santee California where the gun laws are more strict than most other states and it still happened.
What are the root causes of these shootings? The answer given in most cases is that there is mental illness. Is that really true or is it put out there because authorities really don’t know.
If it is mental illness then why is there so much more of it today than 40 years ago? What is making all of this mental illness? How can that be fixed so that we solve the problem before it is a problem?
I don’t claim to have an answer as to how this can be stopped. That is a part of my frustration.

The US is only 6% of the global population, but owns over 32% of the world’s guns. There are 300 million guns in the US alone, almost one for every person here. We just experienced 2 mass shootings in 10 days. In Uvalde, TX while armed officers waited an hour, 19 children and 2 teachers were slaughtered by an 18 year old armed with 2 AR-15 rifles. The shooter fired 116 bullets in just minutes while those trained, armed and Kevlar protected officers failed to enter the classroom. So tell us all again how a “good” person with a gun could “prevent” shootings?
The AR-15 rifle is a weapon of war. It is made to blow humans apart. I will repeat that. The AR-15 is designed for mass killings and to maim humans. It is a weapon of war. It is not designed for hunting or sportsmanship, it is not meant to be on the streets and is certainly not to be used on a classroom of 4th graders. Yet, with these lax gun laws and easy access, an 18 year old was able to purchase two of them for his birthday without any questions or restrictions.
There are too many guns period. More guns equal more violence, more crime, more death. And yes, mental health plays a role, however studies and statistical data show less than 5% of mass shooters are/were considered mentally ill.
The real sickness is us; specifically, the NRA’s bulls**t and bankrolling/lobbying efforts of the GOP, the elected officials who refuse to take action despite overwhelming public support for Universal background checks and reasonable measures to restrict these types of guns from proliferating our streets and lastly, those who simply say nothing will change and therefore do nothing more to change things.
