Over 50 protestors gathered at the intersection of Soledad Canyon Road and Sand Canyon Saturday, the location of a recent viral video to boycott a local business.
About a week ago, a video surfaced of couple Renee McAlonis and Mike Foster, owners of Bergie’s Bar And Grill, telling a man his fruit stand was “illegal” and wanted the vendor to leave the area.
“This isn’t the ghetto, it needs to go,” Foster said to the fruit vendor in the video.
Now, local activists have taken to the streets in front of Bergie’s to boycott the business.
“We do not support racism in our town,” said Sam Sakabu. “We want to let racists know, whether they are business owners, residents, or other citizens know, that their behavior is not ok and that their behavior is not welcome here.”
Mike Foster, owner of the Canyon Country-based Bergie’s, apologized recently, saying his main issue was the permitting for the fruit stand, and did not intend for the situation to reach the boiling point.
“We apologize for the entire situation,” Foster said. “It got out of control, and it should not have gotten to that level.”

“I did not intend for this to end up the way it did,” Foster said. “We are truly sorry, and apologize again.”
When reached for comment, the vendor of La Palma Fresh Fruit, who wished not to be named, felt scared in the moment when the couple started the verbal tirade.
“The lady said we couldn’t sell because we didn’t pay taxes and because we were from Mexico,” said the niece of the vendor who was translating. “We had water to have customers wash their hands, and they (McAlonis) threw it on the ground.”
The fruit stand has received a lot of support from the community after the video surfaced.
“I am out here protesting because I am a huge supporter of fruit stands. I am a large supporter of what they bring to our communities,” said Tate Dickens. “I think they need to be supported in any way we can.”

Everything got worse for these people since 2016, I wonder why? They fell for the lies and promises of demographic change from a con~man and now they are left with the consequences. Why are these vendors allowed to do business without the legal credentials.?If you want to talk about discrimination then this is a good example of it.why is this allowed?People have a right to ask the business if they have all the regulations in place especially food serving businesses that should have their employees approve health cards .I know that when I patronized a business they should clearly have all their permits on display for the public which in this case it wasn’t..that is my problem with this.that is the real question .this people are actually breaking the city ordinance and are probably here illegally..not everthing is about race.You are really defending lawlessness if you suppport this kind of nonsemse..BTW they were warned by the Police and rightfully so for unlawfully breaking the law ..
People set up garage sales, sell items through classifieds and on~line all the time. I do agree permits should be enforced for vendors but that is not the issue most have with this situation. The Bergie’s owners are in no position to enforce these laws . They should have just called the proper authorities and went about their day. Instead they chose to get aggressive and bully the vendor while verbally assaulting him. Though it wasn’t captured on video, per the vendor, some racist comments were made. Add to that the racist history of the bar and you have a full~blown racist incident. People don’t play that sh*t anymore Raymond.

Bergies people are super jerks~ total “bags.” And not just their years of racist dialogue within their business.
Yet they are correct asking about health permits and expecting other businesses to abide by the same laws all business owners do.
Street vendors still need health permits and to pay taxes.
We all benefit from local city, county, state and federal services (public schools. law enforcement during school shootings, fire departments during summer fire season, clean nice roads and freeways, and hundreds of other benefits our tax dollars contribute toward) we take for granted daily.
Aside from no accountability for health issues that may arise from
a person operating an illegal food service station, we are a community that all has equal rights and responsibilities.
If the vendor has no permit no health certification/food handling and pays no taxes….it’s coming out of yours, our parents and our children’s pockets.
Ensuring all in our community are required to abide by the same set of laws~ well that is just REASONABLNESS.
Don’t patron a ‘big hot’ bar but don’t support illegal business either. Be reasonable.
Incorrect. Random people don’t have any right or authority to demand business credentials anymore than they have the right to demand immigration papers. They do have the right to mind their own business, full stop. And any racist maniac who forgets the fact that they are nobody, with no authority, and have no right to demand anything, should be put squarely in their place. Using force if necessary. It is an expensive and painful lesson to learn. Hopefully after these two racists go bankrupt they will use that lesson and become better people.

So is it ok for Caucasian homeless to be ask and beg for money but its not ok for hispanics trying to make a living by selling flowers, oranges and fruit on fruit stands. Rules are rules correct? Small businesses are struggling everyday with a ton of rules and regulations to follow. Struggling to make it LEGALLY!!!

If the owners of Bergie’s did not like the vendor and suspected he didn’t have a permit, their remedy was to report it to the city/county/police. They resorted to self-help and were disrespectful to another man based on his heritage. That is not OK. Let me add that I have no political affiliation and I am a business owner. I love law-enforcement, just hate racism.

Would Renee and Mike have reacted the same if the unlicensed vendor was white? Definitely, which means they’re not racist. When I was a kid racist meant judging a person by the color of their skin. The opposite of that was to judge a person as an individual by the content of their character. The fruit vendor was breaking the law and they were addressing him solely on that basis, and that’s not racism. Vendors can sell in the SCV IF THEY ARE PERMITTED. This vendor doesn’t wear his face mask correctly. I sure hope no one gets the coronavirus. It’s reaks havoc on you or a loved one. Saw the line the other day after this situation happened and very few people had masks or were social distancing. I pray they all stay healthy.

Kitty, the fruit vendor had no other means to make money due to being laid off from his forklift job so how else is he supposed to make money? Quit being an asshole and have some empathy towards people who are losing their jobs and have no other means to make money unless you want to bring them into your own home and feed and cloth them!

This is stupid. People should be allowed to say they dont want unpermitted carts in front of their businesses. Have you seen how LA looks or San Fransisco or San Fernando with carts all over and homeless tents all around. I love fruit like that but there are actually clean permitted small businesses that we should support.

For maximum damage, we should wait until everything opens up again, whenever that is, and THEN picket the place, etc. and be vocal. Not doing as much business now anyway.
