Providence Holy Cross Receives $2 Million Grant

The US Department of Justice has awarded Providence Holy Cross Medical Center with a $2 million grant to combat violence in the San Fernando Valley.

In association with multiple community organizations Providence Holy Cross Medical Center is set to support victims of violence in a two-pronged plan.

“The first step is intervention, treating every victim of violence who comes through our doors and understanding the circumstances,” said Anthony Ortiz-Luis, director of Providence community health investment in the Valley. “The other piece is to work to strengthen the safety net of violence prevention providers in the San Fernando Valley.”

To help with the mission Alliance for Community Empowerment, which works with at-risk youth, is set to be one of Holy Cross’ partners.

Another partner is the Center for Living and Learning, which helps those coming out of rehabilitation find jobs.

The final partner, Tarzana Treatment Center, helps provide a variety of services including treatment for drug abuse, mental health concerns, sober living, and more.

“It’s our hope that Providence can be a part of the solution to protecting our community from violence,” said Bernie Klein, M.D., the hospital’s chief executive. “It’s heartbreaking to see the impacts of violence week after week in our trauma center. We’re thankful to our partners who are joining us in this critically important work to help our patients when they leave the hospital and to build safer communities.”

The government investment was made possible, in part, by the historic Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022, which aims to support the development of community infrastructure as a supplement to the crucial function of law enforcement, according to the Community-Based Violence Intervention and Prevention Project

The financing is reflective of a comprehensive strategy for public safety that combines a strong network of community resources with efficient and fair policing.
