Residents Start Petition To Save Valencia Ice Station After Officials Announce Closure

Santa Clarita residents have started a petition asking the City of Santa Clarita and the Los Angeles Kings to purchase the Valencia Ice Station after officials announced that it would be closing after 20 years of business.

Santa Clarita resident Leigh Ann Dunleavy began a petition to save the ice station two days after it was announced that the station would be closing its doors due to “the uncertainty of a reopening date combined with loss of income due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to ice station officials.

The closing of the ice rink represents a significant loss for our local youth and their families,” Dunleavy wrote.

The petition calls for both the City of Santa Clarita and the Los Angeles Kings to purchase and operate the ice station so that it can “continue to bring joy to thousands in our local community.”

“The Ice Station has truly been a home away from home for so many kids over the past two decades, giving them a safe place to congregate with their friends,” Dunleavy wrote. “Thousands of kids are devastated right now with the closing of their place to forget all their troubles and pursue their passion.”

The 93,000 square-foot station has operated in the Santa Clarita Valley for the past 20 years, with tens of thousands of people using the facility each year, according to officials.

Several local hockey leagues and the Tri-Valley Figure Skating Club also held their practices and games at the facility.

“The rink also hosts several tournaments and ice skating competitions and shows every year that bring in thousands of people from out of town, which contribute to our local economy by way of restaurant, shopping and hotel revenue,” Dunleavy wrote. “Also contributing to the economy is the filming revenue the Ice Station brings to Santa Clarita.”

As of noon Saturday, over 1,100 people had signed the petition.

“It will not be Awesometown without ice,” Dunleavy wrote.

  1. Please don’t take this down. It’s needed to have a place where people can interact have fun get exercise and put their phones away for few hours. Good fun family enjoyment.

  2. It’s a bit premature to put this out right at this moment when theirs more important things to worry about. Let’s get past this pandemic and discuss it in the future. I realize it is important but like previous post stated it can be used for a morgue if needed.

    • What are you talking about? Forget The Coronavirus, these children need their ice time. Parents DON’T care about what’s going on in the world… their ENTITLED children needs to skate because that’s ALL that they know how to do. Hurry up, Ice Station… open up because kids are losing their minds without their hockey & figure skating. Where do I sign????

  3. Find a way to keep this place going. Healthy activity for youth and others. Exercise is good medicine. Great social setting for all. If Santa Clarita can have swim and aquatic facilities, softball and baseball fields and other sports facilities; an ice skating place would fit in well,

  4. Pls stop the closing of Ice Station. The only place in Santa Clarita.

  5. Friends and family want to save the rink for children today and generations to come.

  6. Dont get rid of it’s a good place for the kids

  7. With more kids turning to video games and augmented reality, this is the last thing that should be closed as our youth need safe places to meet and enjoy some physical activity. Get these kids out from their computers and on line games and reconnect with reality. This would be a great loss. Santa Clarita kids have lost enough this year. Let’s try and save this wonderful outlet for our community.

  8. obviously the ice station was hurting before this whole virus. This being said they should have made more open hour skating for the public. I will say ever time I wanted to take my son it wasn’t open skating. I think what the ice station didn’t realize was even though we are in Santa Clarita there are still parents that work and not all parents are ok with just dropping there kid off and leaving. It’s sucks that they are closing there doors but I don’t feel that this is something right now that needs to be petitioned. There are more important things

  9. Please don’t close the Ice Station!! It means so much to so many people!!

  10. Santa Clarita should buy the ice rink I think it’s a fundamental need for the children, and residence to make this a proper city. The ice rink is also good for the local economy, as someone touched on earlier.

  11. This comes at a bad time with all the closures. My two cents is that there are more benefits from the existence of this facility versus not having it.

I cannot speak on behalf of the figure skating, curling, and other sports that utilize this facility, but I can tell you that people from of all ages from boys and girls, 4 years old (or younger) up to men in their 60’s participate in some form of hockey, be it lessons, an adult league, or youth league.
Their Junior A program (Flyers) have helped pave the way for young men and women to develop skills that eventually lead to scholarships.
The weekend Hockey tournaments generate revenue for local restaurants and hotels. You can get several teams from several different divisions coming in from across the country to participate for that coveted banner…but they still need to sleep and eat. So there’s that benefit too.

This does not include all the birthday parties, company parties and other special events that they host as well.

In addition to the sports, it is also a pretty big contributor to the filming industry…lots of commercials are filmed here on a regular basis.

On the negative side, the average electrical bill just keep the ice frozen during summer months reaches approximately $45,000.00 per month. Yes that’s $45 thousand per month. To be shut down during a pandemic is necessary for the safety of everyone, but it obviously has a huge financial impact on a private owner, especially when this is the time they make the money / reserves to cover the summer expenses.

Hope it works out for everyone…

    • The rink needs a solar farm like the one across the street at the high school and add a solar plant on their huge roof. Take up a collection for that to happen. Would be a great promotion for a solar company. A long time solution to their power problem when they open up again.

  12. I will be glad to contribute to keeping open.

  13. 18,000 + people signed the petition that was sent to city hall. Everything is affected by this virus especially our kids. Providing a place to play sports, socialize and be active should be at the top of the list. Let’s make sure it stays open.
