The Santa Clarita City Council presented certificates to the winners of the Fourth of July Patriotic Tour and Pee-Wee Parade Saturday morning.
The City Council and the City of Santa Clarita’s “Patriotic Trolley” departed the Old Town Newhall Library to visit the homes of the three finalists in the City’s “Fourth of July Patriotic Tour” contest and award certificates for the Grand Prize, Second Prize and Third Prize.
“To allow residents to celebrate the holiday and participate in new fun and creative events, the City introduced the Patriotic Tour and Pee-Wee Parade,” city officials wrote in a statement Thursday. “The Patriotic Tour challenged residents to decorate their home or business for the Fourth of July, while entrants in the Pee-Wee Parade designed miniature parade floats at home.”
At each of the three residences, the City Council took photos and admired the community’s work to creatively showcase their patriotism for the Fourth of July.
Residents decorated their houses and yards, some even taking the current COVID situation as inspiration. Liz Bunkell put masks on her flamingos in her yard, and spaced them each six feet apart.
The Council then picked up the Pee-Wee Parade Grand Marshall, seven year-old Ella Fernandez, at her home. She rode with the Council and her family back to the Old Town Newhall Library, where she presented the Pee-Wee Parade Sweepstakes Grand Prize to the winner.
“My name is Ella Fernandez and I am proud to be the Grand Marshall of the first ever City of Santa Clarita Pee-Wee parade. I am happy to present the winner of the Sweepstakes Award to the Pee-Wee float – Young Americans Spirit by Christine Marmion,” read Ella as she announced the winner.
Winners of the City’s “Fourth of July Patriotic Tour” contest were J.C. and Celina Mejia, Liz Bunkell, and Nicole Fox-Herrington.
