Santa Clarita Declares Local State Of Emergency, Instates 6 P.M. Curfew

The Santa Clarita City Council declared a local state of emergency on Wednesday, instating a 6 p.m. curfew for the city Thursday as officials prepare for a large protest in Valencia reportedly planned for that day.

The Santa Clarita City Council unanimously voted to declare a local state of emergency after calling an emergency meeting Wednesday afternoon due to a possible large protest that the city may face Thursday.

The original curfew was originally planned for 4 p.m. Thursday, according to the agenda, but was later moved to 6 p.m. as a “one day only” curfew for the City of Santa Clarita, said Mayor Cameron Smyth.

Once a local emergency is declared, the City Manager or City Council are able to extend, if necessary, according to City Attorney Joeseph Montes.

“We have received credible evidence that there is going to be a protest,” said Montes said.

As part of the local emergency declaration, a curfew lasting from 6 p.m. Thursday, June 4 to 6 a.m. Friday, June 5 has been instated.

“Peaceful demonstrations are essential to our democratic system, however, during these protests, some individuals have engaged in dangerous and unlawful activity threatening the safety of lawful demonstrators, surrounding businesses, communities and first responders,” the resolution reads.

“We bussed in the National Guard to help deter any looters or those who would wish to riot,” said Smyth. “We are taking a strong stance. If you are a protestor, looking to peacefully use your first amendment right, you are welcome in our community.”

Los Angeles County has been under a curfew since Sunday evening, which is expected to be continually extended for at least several more days, according to officials.

However, county officials have since stated that “other cities may issue their own stricter curfew orders.”

Similar to the Los Angeles County curfew, the 6 p.m. curfew does not apply to individuals going to or from work, those experiencing homelessness and without a viable shelter and those seeking medical treatment.

“There has been widespread criminal acts of arson, looting, assaults, rioting and vandalism to public and private property in nearby cities throughout Los Angeles County since May 30, 2020, and continuing to present,” the emergency resolution reads. “These criminal acts have created conditions that are, or likely to be, beyond the control of local resources and require the combined forces of other political subdivisions to address.”

The curfew also does not apply to peace officers, firefighters, the National Guard or any other military personnel, according to the order.

“Due to the size of the protest, we have brought in significant, I repeat significant, county resources,” said Captain Justin Diez, with Santa Clarita Valley’s Sheriff’s Station. “We have been coordinating with our partners in the county and the city to ensure this community is protected.”

  1. So much for the 1st Amendment. Will no one stand up for the Constitution?

    • What about standing up to the looters and arsonists? This is how to do that. Protests aren’t being stopped, and are catered to more than rest of the citizens. They can be heard all the other hours of the day, and should not want to be out with the looters so the cause isn’t lost on riots.

    • ? They are being allowed to demonstrate, not riot and loot. I see no constitutional issue here.

    • Not in the name of blm. That has turned into a hate group bringing hate, racists, looting destruction and even death. We can stand for a stop police brutality and expensive force for all movement though.

  2. You bussed in the National Guard? Pretty sure they have their own rides, tanks even, Mr. Smyth.

  3. Can we please get rid of the annoying pop-up ad that will not disappear even when clicking the X? It interferes with my reading the information underneath!

  4. Yes, definitely STOP THE DAMN POP-UPS!!

  5. And a stop the pop-up movement

  6. Thank you Santa Clarita City Council for governing our city according to the constitution, honoring our 1st amendment rights, while protecting our city residents and businesses from the lawless criminals that have accompanied so many of the peaceful demonstrations in cities across the country.

Riots, arson, stealing, people throwing rocks and bricks at other people and property is NOT part of the 1st amendment.

    Our Amendment I says…
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

As we all are hurting so very deeply for the family of George Floyd, our brothers and sisters of color, and every other black man and woman that has been physically or emotionally harmed by our ignorant system, we eagerly look forward to the reform that will transpire from the peaceful protests that will finally produce everlasting change.

We look forward to letting our voices be heard as one today.

    Protest Responsibly

  7. Just in case you don’t know:

The Democratic Alliance (DAA) for Action of Santa Clarita(https://www.daa.org/post/local-groups-concerned-with-city-of-santa-clarita-s-response-to-protests)announced yesterday:

“It has come to our attention that there is a rumor circulating of a planned protest in support of the Black Lives Matter movement on Thursday, June 4, 2020 at 12pm at the corner of Valencia Blvd. and McBean Pkwy. As local leaders of progressive organizations, we are not aware of or in contact with any organizers of either local or out of town groups planning such an event.

Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend to our members and supporters that they not attend or participate in any action in the City of Santa Clarita on Thursday, June 4th.”

  8. Thank you Mr. Smyth and out Leaders for taking care of us and going above and beyond. Be safe ALL
