Santa Clarita Deputies Buy Supplies For Family Whose Father Lost Job Due To Pandemic

Several deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station worked together on Wednesday to provide food and clothing for a family whose father lost his job as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Wednesday, deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station were patrolling in Newhall when they met a father and his small child, according to Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the station.

They learned the father had recently lost his job due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and was struggling to provide the basic necessities for his son, “ Miller wrote in an official post. “One deputy called another deputy, and let’s just say—word got around fast.”

This man’s story is not uncommon in the Santa Clarita Valley. The City of Santa Clarita, whose economy relies “heavily” on entertainment, film, aerospace production, retail and food services, was recently named the third hardest hit city in California by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the 17th in the entirety of the United States.

As a result, countless residents have lost their jobs, as the Los Angeles County “Safer at Home” order issued in March has kept businesses deemed “nonessential” from operating.

After hearing about the man’s situation, two deputies who were at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station in Valencia “immediately” went to the nearby Target. There, they bought food for the family, as well as clothing for the man’s young child.

“Phone calls were made and resources were shared with the family so that they would know where to go, and what to do—until dad can ‘get back on his feet again.’” Miller wrote.

One of the resources that station officials connected the family with was Family Promise of Santa Clarita Valley, a nonprofit organization that “specializes in helping families in crisis.”

“There are many ways to assist them in their mission whether it is through donations or volunteering,” Miller wrote. “We are all in this together.”

  1. With the best welfare system in the world there is no reason why you can’t take care of yourself and your family in a pandemic or no pandemic

    • There are a lot of people who are hardworking proud and never considered being in a welfare program of any kind, that is why a lot of people smacked in this contagion are not aware of such help unlike others who were born, grew up and die/d forever in welfare!

  2. Thank you deputies for showing compassion and some human decency. I’m sure many of these acts go unnoticed but I’m glad to hear that we have people like you staffed within LASD.
