A Santa Clarita Eagle Scout is raising funds to assist refugees in Bangladesh after achieving the highest rank in scouting.
Benjamin Haslam, 15, is traveling to Bangladesh to help build schools and dig wells for the Rohingya refugees along the Myanmar border, according to his father, Ryan Haslam.
“Benjamin was just awarded his Eagle rank in scouting,” his father said. “He is the second of my six sons to achieve this award. Benjamin is now traveling to Bangladesh for two weeks to help (those in need).”
Benjamin’s uncle has been making donations and supporting those in Bangladesh for some years now, according to Benjamin.
“(My uncle) was doing this trip for a few years and this year we decided we’d go with him,” Benjamin said. “He’s funded the building of schools, wells for clean water and handing out supplies to people.”
In an effort to make an individual difference, Benjamin has completed “odd jobs” for friends and neighbors, raising money for supplies, such as food, toothbrushes and other amenities.
In addition to the money raised through his labor, Benjamin has also started a GoFundMe to assist his efforts in the refugee camp, and has already raised hundreds of dollars.
“I would like to provide as many of the urgently needed supplies as possible,” reads Benjamin’s GoFundMe page. “For those interested, 100 percent of the donations will go directly to the refugees.”
The charity Compassion Takes Action has asked Benjamin to be their international reporting correspondent. Benjamin set up a YouTube channel to post videos reporting on all that the charity is accomplishing on this mission, according to Haslam.
“I’m looking forward to the documentary making,” Benjamin said. “It will be interesting to interview people, get perspective on what they are struggling with, and how I can help them.”
