Santa Clarita Elks Lodge Raises Thousands Of Dollars In Community Roast

The Santa Clarita Elks Lodge held a roast of Bill Reynolds, a local veteran and Director of Veterans Affairs at KHTS, raising thousands of dollars for both local veterans and children with disabilities.

Reynolds was the roastee for Saturday’s event, which is the first roast held by the Santa Clarita Elks Lodge since 2014, according to Cheryl Laymon, Charity Roast Chairperson for the lodge.

“I think the roast was fabulous,” Laymon said. “The atmosphere in the room was so nice, and everyone was having a good time.”

Reynolds had been apprehensive about the event in the weeks leading up to the roast, as he had never been to a roast before.

“I was fretting about my portion of the rebuttal,” Reynolds said. “I didn’t know what I was going to be saying because I didn’t know what I was going to be hearing. It was just nerve-racking.”

However, Reynolds and the full house in attendance had, “an absolute blast,” according to Reynolds.

“It just knocked my socks off,” Reynolds said. “It was a full house, I think all-in-all it was a big success. Everyone really enjoyed themselves.”

The lodge hosted the roast to raise money for local veterans and children with disabilities, and while the final total has yet to be determined, Laymon said that they raised roughly between $8,000 and $9,000.

“We felt like we had a good reason for people to come and want to support the event,” Laymon said. “We turned out to be right because the program just turned out so well.”

Reynolds was roasted by several prominent Santa Clarita officials, including Councilman Bob Kellar and City Manager Ken Striplin. At the end of the event, Reynolds was presented with a certificate signed by the entire Santa Clarita City Council, as well as a plaque made by a local Army colonel who served as a combat chaplain.

“I’m getting positive feedback from friends and tons of phone calls about how fun the roast was,” Reynolds said.
