Santa Clarita Girl Scout To Host Community Sew-In For Gold Award Project

A Santa Clarita Girl Scout has decided to host a community sewing workshop as a part of her Gold Award project to benefit several local causes.

As part of the Girl Scout Gold Award project by Jessie Nilsen, Santa Clarita residents can sew a variety of projects meant to benefit Santa Clarita veterans, the SCV Senior Center and The Painted Turtle camp.

Sewing experience is not needed. This is a free event open to all ages, and all materials will be provided. Organizers are prepared to have experienced sewers on hand to assist, according to event organizers.

As a Girl Scout Gold Award project in conjunction with the SCV Quilt Guild (SCVQG), the goal of the event is to bring the community together to help those in need, according to Nilsen.

The project is an outreach program meant to educate Santa Clarita residents on how the SCVQG helps the community, and to give residents an opportunity to be involved in helping too.

“In the 12-plus years that I’ve assisted Boy Scout and Girl Scouts in a mentoring role at William S. Hart Park, I’ve seen many service projects developed and brought to life in the form of legacy projects: trail steps, kiosks, benches, outdoor amphitheaters, fire pits, cactus gardens and paths,” said Al Ewing, head of recreation services at Hart Park. “This Gold Award candidate, Jessica Nilsen, takes service projects to a new level.”

The SCV Quilt Guild promotes the art of quilting through sharing, friendship, education and meaningful service to the community, aiming to preserve an American folk art that is vulnerable to being lost as a traditional home arts form, according to officials.

Every year, the guild sews projects to benefit people in need in the Santa Clarita community.

Sewing enthusiasts are encouraged to join the community sew-in at the Centre Building in the Oak Room at 20880 Centre Pointe Parkway. There will be three opportunities to participate:
Saturday, Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Thursday, Sept. 5 from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Sunday, Sept. 8 from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Space is limited, so anyone who would like to attend is encouraged to RSVP  here.
