Santa Clarita Holds ‘Light Up Main Street’ In Honor Of ‘Saugus Strong’

The City of Santa Clarita celebrated the annual “Light Up Main Street” in honor of Saugus High School after the tragedy last month.

The Christmas tree in front of the Old Town Newhall Library had a blue Centurion on top after the unveiling ceremony Sunday to recognize the “Saugus Strong” community.

“Tonight we are going to kick off the holiday season, but before we get to that, we need to recognize the tragedy that took place in our community a little over a week ago,” said Mayor Marsha McLean. “We need to acknowledge the young lives that were lost. Gracie and Dominic, your lives will never be forgotten.”

McLean also recognized the students, parents, teachers and community as a whole who are “hurting, scared and heartbroken.”

“We need to continue to express love to each other, be kind to one another and be aware that the person standing next to you might be grieving in unimaginable ways. And more than anything, we need to acknowledge the strength and resilience of the Santa Clarita community, ” McLean said.

The mayor then led the crowd of hundreds in a moment of silence for Gracie and Dominic.

Following the moment of silence, the William S. Hart High School carolers sang a rendition of “Silent Night.”

McLean then moved onto the “joyful” part of the program, introducing KTLA Morning News Co-Anchor Chris Schauble, a Santa Clarita resident.

“The world will hear us, I promise you that,” said Schauble of the way Santa Clarita came together after the shooting. “We are going to show everybody, Santa Clarita, Saugus Strong.”

With the lighting of the tree, the holiday season on Main Street officially started.
