Santa Clarita Ice Skating Community Parades To ‘Save The Rink’

A parade of cars drove through the parking lot of the Valencia Ice Station on Sunday to show their love for the rink and rally support for their effort to save the rink from closing permanently.

The event was organized through the Facebook group “Ice Station Info,” which formed in the wake of the rink’s closure on March 25 and has since grown to include 1,142 members as of Monday.

SNAP Sports, a Valencia-based nonprofit organization offering sports-based programming to athletes with special needs, and the parent organization of the Valencia SNAP Flyers Special Hockey Club, participated in the parade.

“The Ice Station was our home, our anchor, and enabled us to grow the program to the point that we began the annual SoCal Special Hockey Festival, hosting teams from all across the U.S.,” said Dave Chase, executive director of SNAP Sports. “It was the only annual special hockey festival west of the Rockies, and losing the rink means we lose the opportunity to continue serving our athletes, and hundreds of other athletes with special needs throughout the west. Without the Ice Station re-opening, it will be very challenging to continue this programming. We are very supportive of any and all efforts to re-open the rink.”

More than 200 cars participated in the parade, according to Leigh Ann Dunleavy, an admin on the page.

Many of the cars were decorated with “Save The Rink” signage and the colors of the various teams that have called the rink home.

As each car pulled through, passengers hung out of their windows and posed for a picture in front of a large banner that read #WEWILLSAVETHERINK.

“My son plays on the SNAP Flyers and my dad and I coach, so that’s three generations engaged at the rink. These kind of family connections are rare, but because we had the Ice Station, it happened,” said SNAP Sports Skating Director Heidi Jeffrey. “As a single parent, the value of the relationships and lessons we have all learned have become so important to overcoming my son’s disability. With the closure of the Ice Station, our programming is in jeopardy, and we are trying to do whatever we can do to get the doors back open. That’s what the parade is all about, a safe and sane way to have our voices heard.”

The organizers also signed each family’s name on the banner before the picture as a visual representation of the amount of support for the rink, but kept passengers in their cars in order to maintain social distancing.

The parade was the latest attempt by the community to rally support for the skating rink.

Some members of the group previously started an online petition calling on the City of Santa Clarita and the Los Angeles Kings to purchase the rink.

The group has created an official “Save The Rink” website here, where links to sign their petition or join the Facebook group are available.

  1. Rather than parade around the ice rink, you might be better served to pony up some money to cause it to reopen. Or is that someone else’s responsibility?
