Santa Clarita has been named the 12th hardest-working city in America, according to a study released Wednesday.
Kempler Industries, an industrial machinery company, analyzed data from the U.S. Census Bureau from nearly 200 cities across the U.S. with a population of 150,000 or more, according to the study.
“Americans take great pride in their work ethic. However, some cities tend to work harder than others,” company officials said.
Kempler then ranked each city from hardest working to least, and found that Santa Clarita ranked as the No. 12 hardest-working city in America. Rankings were based on the following metrics:
- Average commute time (Santa Clarita averaged 34.9 minutes)
- Average workweek hours (Santa Clarita averaged 38.4 hours)
- Percentage of workforce population aged 16-64 (63.9 percent)
- Percentage of senior workforce aged 65 and up (20.2 percent)
- The percentage of unused vacation days (30.5 percent)
The city of Santa Clarita was the second-highest in California with a score of 77.5, with San Francisco at the top for the state with a score of just over 81.
“Santa Clarita has a very strong workforce,” said Holly Schroeder, president and CEO of the Santa Clarita Valley Economic Development Corporation (SCVEDC).
There are many factors which contribute to the workforce, including the fact that Santa Clarita is one of the most educated populations in Los Angeles County, according to officials.
“More than two-thirds of residents have at least some higher education,” Schroeder said. “This is what most employers are looking for when considering relocating.”
The SCVEDC recently launched “Live, Work SCV,” a job board aimed at matching local talent with jobs in the Santa Clarita Valley.
With local nonprofits to promote new businesses in Santa Clarita, and several industrial projects set to add thousands of square feet of space, officials are hopeful for the future economy.
“The workforce is growing,” Schroeder said. “With new projects being built, there is more opportunity for businesses to move to Santa Clarita.”
