The City of Santa Clarita announced its plans to host a 2020 Neighborhood Cleanup and online Environmental Expo on Sept. 26, a socially distant alternative to the annual River Rally and Expo.
“The City is excited for residents to take part in the community-wide effort to keep Santa Clarita green and beautiful,” said a statement from the City of Santa Clarita.
The annual River Rally is an event that draws hundreds of residents from across the community in an effort to clean up the Santa Clarita riverbed. This year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and safety regulations, there will be no access to the riverbed or large cleanup groups.
In response to these restrictions, the event has been modified to practice social distancing and to utilize online learning tools, according to the City.
Participants are able to pick up litter around their neighborhoods with the cleanup tools provided to them at drive-thru stations located around the city from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.
While supplies last, participants will receive trash bags, a drought-resistant plant, free giveaways and instructions for a scavenger hunt with the chance to win raffle prizes, City officials said.
Litter must be searched for in safe and public areas. Collected litter must also be properly disposed of in the proper trash bins at the participant’s residence.
After beautifying the local neighborhoods, the online Environmental Expo can be found here. A series of educational videos on recycling, water quality, composting and more is expected to be posted and feature some of the City’s environmental experts.
Participants must first pre-register for the event as a volunteer here. A face covering and close-toed shoes are required and comfortable clothes are recommended while cleaning up. Additionally, a face covering and maintaining social distancing is required at all drive-thru stations.
