Santa Clarita Officials Encourage Residents To Participate In ‘Great California ShakeOut’ Drill

The City of Santa Clarita is set to host the Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill Thursday at City facilities to train staff how to respond in an earthquake, officials said.

The earthquake drill is conducted each year to help train community members on how to properly drop, cover and hold on during a temblor, according to officials.

The Great California ShakeOut is a statewide earthquake drill held annually as an opportunity for the community to review emergency preparedness plans and supplies, according to officials.

Anyone visiting a City facility, such as a Santa Clarita Public Library branch, City Hall or the Newhall and Canyon Country Community Centers, are set to have an opportunity to participate in the drill.

City staff are expected to play an audio recording at 10:17 a.m. encouraging those in attendance to practice taking cover, according to officials.

At City Hall, an evacuation drill is set to take place following the drop, cover and hold on exercise; however, evacuations are not planned to take place at other City locations.

The community is encouraged to take the following “Drop, Cover and Hold On” steps during an earthquake:

  • Move only as far as necessary to reach a safe place. Take cover under a sturdy desk or table, hold onto it firmly and be prepared to move with the shaking.
  • Hold the position until the ground stops shaking and it is safe to move.

City officials recommend residents avoid standing in a doorway for safety during an earthquake, as injury can occur from swinging doors, according to officials.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
