Santa Clarita Ranked 13th Safest City In California

Santa Clarita ranked the 13th safest city in the state of California, with only one Los Angeles County city making the top 10.

Out of the different cities throughout the state ranked by SafeWise,  Santa Clarita placed 13th on the list, according to the study.

SafeWise names the safest cities based on population numbers in relation to crime reports from the FBI, based mostly on property and violent crime numbers, according to SafeWise.

SafeWise also ran a nationwide survey to find out residents’ most common safety concerns in their areas.

“We looked at the number of reported violent crime aggravated assault, murder, rape and robbery in each city and the number of reported property crimes, burglary, larceny-theft and motor vehicle theft,” according to the SafeWise study.

One reason why Santa Clarita has been ranked the safest cities in California is by different crime operations the Sheriff’s Department runs.

“In 2018 and 2019, there was a shift in the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s focus on crime enforcement by doing proactive policing through targeting crime enforcement effort,” said Captain Justin Diez with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “We were able to lower crime a significant amount.”

As a result of the proactive policing throughout Santa Clarita, crime reached its lowest point in Santa Clarita history in 2020, partially helped by the lockdowns and the proactive policing.

Since than crime has been steadily rising since January of 2021, but Diez says crime is still down by 16 percent over the last 5 years despite the rise in crime.

Diez feels the City can become safer and have crime go down once L.A. County stops releasing criminals with a $0 bail.

“There are two things L.A. County needs to do, rescind the emergency no-bail schedule,” Diez said. “This has been going since March 17, 2020, statewide, and was rescinded at the end of 2020 in June. But the County extended it until now. The District Attorney also needs to rescind his directives.”

Although Santa Clarita did not make the top 10, only one L.A. County city made the top with a majority of the winners being in Orange County.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
