Santa Clarita Ranked 5th Fastest-Growing ‘Boomtown’ In California

Santa Clarita has been ranked the 5th top “boomtown” in California from its growing population and business growth, officials said Thursday.

A boomtown is characterized by prosperity and robust development, and these towns are often desirable places to put down roots and take out a mortgage, according to SmartAsset, a personal finance website.

Santa Clarita was ranked 42nd in all cities in America, according to the study.

In order to find the top boomtowns in America, SmartAsset looked at the most recently available data for 500 of the largest cities across the following seven metrics: population change, unemployment rate, change in unemployment rate, GDP growth rate, business growth, housing growth and change in household income, measured between 2014 and 2018, according to SmartAsset officials.

After analyzing this information, the study determined that Santa Clarita ranked 5th, according to officials.

Over the past few years, a number of housing projects in Santa Clarita have either been completed or approved, with the largest development being the Newhall Ranch Project.

That housing project is expected to include 21,500 units of mixed housing and commercial units along a six-mile stretch of Highway 126 west of the 5 Freeway in Valencia.

“We have a reputation for being a family-friendly community and we want to make it remain that way,” said Santa Clarita Mayor Marsha McLean in a previous story.

According to the most recent estimates, Santa Clarita’s population is projected to reach 450,000 people within 15 years — an increase of 150,000 from today, according to officials.

  1. That explains why there it takes me now an hour to get from the 5 freeway home to Saugus. We need toll roads here.

  2. We do not have enough resources to sustain these numbers.

  3. There is a lot of inaccuracies in this post. 450,000 people in 15 years would have to include the Newhall Ranch project which is not a city project, as well as county areas like Stevenson Ranch, West Ridge, and Castaic communities.
The City by itself does not have the current population mentioned in the article. The article should state Santa Clarita Valley…
Toll roads is not the answer either, we pay enough taxes for roads with all the propositions that show up on the ballot every election.
I do agree that this community is a great place to raise a family.

  4. Nothing to brag about when we have watched our town destroy itself while those in charge are lining their pockets . After living out here for over 50 years enough is enough . Were getting out of Dodge. Please tell me how our increased numbers for Bars/Liquor stores/Restaurants that serve alcohol, smoke shops/vape store , sex stores and rehab centers is a family friendly town? Not to mention the homeless ,junkies and crime are on the rise. Our Sheriffs are out numbered and can not properly serve our town yet you keep building at a unsafe and reckless rate. People who have lived out here for 10 years or less wont understand how nice it used to be .

  5. SCV has/was one of the best/safest places to live!! With all the N/S/E/W building, can you imagine the Newhall Pass & ALL roads in 5 years?!?! Already are safety is compromised by Newhall/Palmdale/Lanc./Valley/LA, etc. criminals preying on hard working taxpayers!!! Build more & widened roads & help LE with the influx of criminals!! Thanks to the Liberals with Prop. 47 & 57 and AB 109!! Stop the insanity!!! Thanks Liberals??!!

    • Agree it is getting worse. There are no jobs available for these homes either. Those of us that have to commute already see how bad this is going to be.

No toll road, we already paid for the project that isn’t even finished and Newsom keeps stealing our road tax money for climate change. Give me a break!

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
