Santa Clarita Residents Hold Candlelight Vigil In Memory Of Shooting Victims

Following the events of the most recent acts of violence in other states, Santa Clarita residents organized a candlelight vigil to honor the lives taken.

Held outside Santa Clarita City Hall, demonstrators gathered Monday evening to make the statement that “enough is enough,” according to event organizers.

“We’re out here, first, to be in solidarity with the victims and their families,” said Chad Kampbell, president of Democratic Alliance for Action of Santa Clarita (DAA). “Secondly, to say this kind of violent acts, these acts of horrific gun violence, should not become normal in the United States.”

Kampbell recalls a time where mass shootings were not so frequent and they were treated as national tragedies, whereas today the rate at which gun violence happens is “cyclical.”

When asked about the political stance of the evening’s vigil, Kampbell could not speak for all in attendance, but believes there are solutions for preventing further massacres.

“I’ve always been anti-guns,” said Susie Kaufman. “And what’s going on now is just deplorable.”

Kaufman believes the recent gun violence has been encouraged by certain political figures, cautioning against those who “spew hate.”

The mourner said she was present, with candle in hand, for not only those who died, but those who survived and will carry physical and emotional scars with them.
