Santa Clarita residents gathered in front of City Hall to protest and counter-protest the detention camps along the U.S.-Mexico border with “Lights for Liberty.”
Over 50 people coalesced in Friday’s protest in front of Santa Clarita City Hall aimed at garnering attention for the children being held at the southern border, according to officials.
“These are kids,” said Kelly Franti, a Saugus resident who initiated the event in Santa Clarita. “They’re being neglected and we got to do better than this. We have to take care of them.”
On top of taking care of neglected children, protestors claimed that asylum should be given to refugees and the United States’ immigration system is flawed.
“In my family, the ones that were given asylum, lived,” said Sandra Cattell, another protestor at the event. “The other part of my family denied asylum are no more. They were Jewish families trying to emigrate, they were not given visas, and they perished. Refugees need to be taken care of. There’s a reason people leave their homes.”
However, not all present shared this position. Just a few feet down Valencia Blvd, almost a dozen people arrived to counter-protest.
Counter-protestors claimed that the other side was “misleading people,” and lying about the nature of the detention camps. The counter-protest was in response to the initial call for the kids to be taken care of.
“We heard they were having this rally, this protest,” said Greg Aprahamiam, a counter-protestor. “They were protesting Trump’s policy with illegal aliens flooding over the border and we are here to counter-protest.”
Aprahamian said he was out front of Santa Clarita City Hall to show his support for President Trump and immigration laws.
While the counter-protesters would not comment on the children held in the camps, Franti had this to say: “They’re not here because they want to be here, we are doing generational damage to these little kids. We can do better than this and we must.”

The videos of VP Pence and other officials at the Texas border detention facility yesterday with more than 40 PEOPLE caged together in cages so small there is not enough room for all to lay on the bare concrete floor at the same time were so horrific Lyndsey Graham looked like he didn’t know whether to puke or applaud. All that was lacking was a Nazi SS uniform for the Christian-Fascist Vice President.
Of coarse the Democrats were blamed. It’s what fascist do, always- blame the other side. This is a humanitarian issue that is our shame as a nation and it is all on TRUMP.
This is NOT a political assessment. It is a HUMANITARIAN crisis of our making. It is shameful.

I am absolutely disgusted at all this protesting about the ILLEGALS who DON’T BELONG HERE. I haven’t heard ONE WORD or seen ANY protests from ANYBODY concerning the way our MILITARY VETERANS have been treated after they return home. Where were ALL the PROTESTORS lining up in the streets IN FAVOR of OUR VETERANS who have sacrificed so much while fighting in wars they served in ??? They were and still are OUR proud CITIZENS and now OUR veterans are in serious need of serious medical attention and government disability pay for getting messed up while serving our country… Now, we have people that ARE COMPLETE STRANGERS coming to our soil, and our LIBERALS are SO HAPPY to hand-out assistance to people who don’t belong here and haven’t spent ONE DAY serving our country… Where is that BIG MOUTH AOC from New York fighting for OUR VETERANS who, so desperately, need help??? Where were all you protestors when the Veterans Administration needed so much of YOUR support to ensure our VETERANS get the attention they deserve ??? I NEVER heard ONE WORD or witnessed ONE protest IN DEFENSE of our VETERANS who ARE in need. I will listen with interest to anyone protesting who is willing to house at least one of these illegal aliens in their own home. If they are not willing to do that, their “protests” are empty and insincere assaults on the sovereignty of our nation. I know people who have adopted children from these countries that are run despicably, and every one of them are FOR enforcing our borders and immigration laws. This is the fault of Congress for NOT FIXING our broken immigration system, not Trump and not ICE. When Trump suggested sending these illegal border-crossers to the congressional districts of sanctuary cities, those same congress-people and cities protested. Such hypocrisy. Same hypocrisy with the protesters unwilling to take illegals at the border into their own homes. Empty screams of racism (that is not present here) do not change reality. This has nothing to do with such empty identity politics.

Not a peep from citizens, organizations, or the media during the last administration. It’s not so much the uproar at the present time as it is the HYPOCRISY that is so blatant. Where was your displeasure and outcry before? Why now, and not then? Where was the media attention on a situation that has been going on for years and years? What is your solution? I ask that question all the time. So far, the answers have been, ‘anything that helps the blameless children’s, and, ‘how about a kibbutz somewhere in rural areas’. You can’t fix a problem without a solution. WHAT’S THE SOLUTION?

Your call for a solution cannot be honestly answered because all of the governments involved (including ours) are corrupt. As long as the corruption exists the solutions will be minimal in helping the intended. These people are fleeing socialist government only to come to a (not so pure) capitalist governed country. Why are they fleeing socialism? Because at some point it doesn’t work anymore. As Margret Thacher put it, “The problem is socialism is that you eventually run out of someone else’s money.” One problem is they expect “socialism” (government handouts they have never worked for) when they get to our border.
We already have a problem with homelessness and housing shortages. Where are we supposed to put 50,000 to 100,000 thousand illegal aliens that cross the border each MONTH. As long as we keep up the incentives to come here they will come. I believe that the protesters are afraid of losing their slave labor gardeners and any other work they can get done by picking up a guy or two at the Home Depot parking lot. Arrest those people for harboring a criminal and fine them substantially and repeatedly for multiple violations and we my see a decrease in incentive. Oh, yes they are criminals. They committed the crime of crossing the border illegally or for not reporting to the court as required.
Parents who deliberately involve their children in criminal activity are unfit to be parents and for the good of the child’s future should be taken away from said parents and put under the care of sensible responsible adults.
I guess the keyword is ‘illegal’. Anyone else that commits an illegal crime has to deal with the consequences. It doesn’t change it to call them ‘undocumented aliens’. They have entered the country illegally. Period! I have no issue with legal immigration. Stand in line like everyone else and wait your turn. We only have so much money to you until you get a job and become self sufficient. Maybe if some of the cry baby’s like Miley Cyrus would sell a few of her mansions, we would have money to support aliens wanting to come here!

Ron Cookson, you hit the ball out of the park when you said that you have no problem with legal immigration. I couldn’t agree with you more! Come here legally and we’ll treat you like welcomed guests. We’ll even give you a lending hand when you need it. We are the most generous people on the planet and have taken in more immigrants than ANY OTHER country around the globe.
I agree with you Mark, these people at the border are the “gimme gimme” type. They want all the hand-outs and that’s what is bringing them over by the droves. Yes, as long as we keep up the incentives to come here, they will continue to come… I still wish that I would have seen this kind of compassion for our military veterans who haven’t asked for anything but good medical care because they’ve been so badly injured and neglected by our government. It amazes me that the HYPOCRITE Democraps don’t really care to see what’s really going on at the VA Medical Facilities, but they are now so concerned about people that they don’t even know from another country putting them over our own CITIZENS, our HEROES, who served this country.
