Saugus Graduate Organizes Socially Distanced Block Party, Fundraiser

A Saugus graduate is throwing a socially distanced block party for his neighborhood to try and raise the spirits of his neighbors while raising funds for the needy.

Kaleb Miner first started having interest in managing events in high school, when he would organize house parties for his friends and spending his free time studying the organization of concerts and festivals.

“During quarantine, I was trying to think of ways that I could do something to help the community,” said Miner. “Everyone seemed so down in my neighborhood.”

Miner had previously organized many events, including the Saugus High Shooting benefit concert “Saugus Dayz” in January, which raised funds for the family of shooting victim Dominic Blackwell.

Miner assured anyone worried by the idea of holding an event — even a socially distanced one — that he had taken the proper precautions.

“I have security guards just in case, I already checked with the neighborhood and they know that they should be staying in their own yards to listen, and in my front yard it’s just going to be  me, my family, the DJ and his daughter, all socially distanced and wearing masks.”

Miner said that while other residents are welcome to drive by and listen to the music, visitors must stay in their vehicles in order to protect themselves and others.

He is also hosting a GoFundMe in order to raise funds for the local Santa Clarita Grocery on behalf of the nonprofit Santa Clarita Coalition. The SCV Grocery is providing meals and groceries to residents as usual, but resources have been taxed by the growing need due to the COID-19 pandemic.

“This is just an event because of the quarantine, I just wanted to do something nice and give back to the community, I know that the homeless population is struggling right now,” said Miner. “Although the middle and upper-class are doing fine right now, I have a lot of friends who are not doing so well, who are going to Dollar Tree for food.”

According to Miner, he wants to continue hosting fundraising events and organizing festivals in the future, and hopes to continue using his skills in event management to benefit others in the community.

“I wanted to make it a fun night, but also give food to the people who need it,” Miner said.
