Saugus Speedway Owner Claps Back At Online Rumor; No Official Close Date

The Bonelli family, owners of the Saugus Speedway, are refuting an online rumor that the iconic swap meet venue would be shutting down at the end of March.

An online rumor began circulating social media at the end of January that the Saugus Speedway would be shutting down at the end of March. The rumor has been shared over a hundred times to various community groups.

The property is currently on the market for sale, however, a source close to the Saugus Speedway informed KHTS that there is no official closing date for a sale. Once a sale is finalized the Bonelli family is anticipated to make an official announcement.

The swap meet is set to continue operating normally until an official announcement is made.

History Of The Saugus Speedway

The Saugus Speedway was originally a “rodeo arena” by Roy Baker in 1927. The 40-acre property was used as a breeding ground for selling luxury horses by Baker, according to SCV History.

During The Great Depression, Baker would sell the property and it would exchange hands several times before landing in the ownership of William Bonelli, a professor of economics at Occidental College. In 1939, Bonelli introduced auto racing and renamed the arena the Saugus Speedway.

The property is still owned by the Bonelli family in the present day and continues to host an outdoor swap meet.

  1. We love the swap meet!

  2. What the heck is “claps back” mean?
    Something got lost in translation.

  3. It’s a dumb way to say, “respond back”. If you’re over 40 I doubt you use this word.
