SCV Grocery Donates 40 Watermelons To College Of The Canyons Football During ‘Hell Week’

The nonprofit SCV Grocery provided 40 watermelons for the College of the Canyons football team on their final day of pre-season training, officials said Thursday.

Teaming with Heart of Canyons Church, SCV Grocery worked with College of the Canyons to congratulate the team on their summer training.

“Our motto is to not do any event alone,” said Bradley Grose, a volunteer with SCV Grocery. “Heart of the Canyons wanted to do an outreach with COC Football, which they had done for several years, and we teamed up to donate 40 watermelons for the final day of their pre-season training, in a very strenuous workout.”

Usually referred to by players as “Hell Week,” the final week of pre-season training in football is known for pushing players further than ever before ahead of the start of school.

“The coaches told the players they saw no winners that day,” Grose said. “They had to run bleachers while carrying their equipment, but when they went the long way around, they found the quartered watermelons.”

SCV Grocery is a nonprofit charity providing the people of Santa Clarita with groceries. With the help of over 70 volunteers, groceries are bought, organized and distributed within a week’s span, according to Grose.

“We are a nonprofit charity for the city of Santa Clarita, providing groceries for those in need,” Grose said. “We encourage people to pay their bills and get their groceries from us… It comes in and we move it very quickly. Our goal is to make the best possible use of the resources given.”

When SCV Grocery has excess food, it is donated to other local outreach programs, including Salvation Army and the petting zoo in William S. Hart Park.

The next event SCV Grocery has scheduled is their Thanksgiving Giveaway, where they plan to provide a Thanksgiving dinner to those in need, complete with enough cooked turkey and sides to feed up to seven people, according to Grose.
