SCV Youth Project Closes For ‘Unknown Duration’ Due To Coronavirus

The nonprofit SCV Youth Project is set to close for an unknown duration due to the coronavirus, officials said Tuesday.

Because the SCV Youth Project is a school-based organization, their services ceased when the schools closed due to the coronavirus, said Kim Goldman, executive director.

“We no longer had access to the more than 200 kids we were seeing individually and in our weekly support groups, or the thousands of kids that we impacted by our weekly/monthly outreach campaigns,” Goldman said.

The SCV Youth Project provides free mental health support to students between the ages of 12 and 18 during the school day on campus, according to officials.

As of Tuesday, it is unclear when the SCV Youth Project is expected to reopen.

“We are committed to reopening our doors as soon as we can to further our mission and we hope that you will continue to support and honor our agency as you always have,” Goldman said.

The SCV Youth Project remains confident that everyone will become stronger once the coronavirus pandemic is over, according to Goldman.

“I am remaining hopeful that we will find ourselves yet again, on the other side of this, bigger and better and ready to welcome the Hart District students back with open arms,” Goldman said.

The SCV Youth Project also had to postpone or cancel fundraising events to comply with social distancing requirements, according to officials.

“On top of not being in a position to provide mental health, we are also not in a position that we can actively fundraise due to ‘Safer at Home’ orders,” Goldman said. “As many other nonprofits who rely heavily on special events, we were forced to cancel or postpone our three biggest fundraisers indefinitely.”

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
