Submissions Open For Memorial Youth Grove In Santa Clarita

The City of Santa Clarita is accepting name submissions for the Youth Grove in Central Park, which commemorates youth who have lost their lives in traffic incidents.

The submissions for names to be added to the grove, which are due July 30, must be for youth ages 24 and younger who lived or attended school in the Santa Clarita Valley and passed away in a traffic accident.

The Youth Grove currently has 115 pillars that resemble cut tree stumps representing lives cut short, according to City officials.

Each pillar bears a plaque displaying the name of a young person killed in a traffic accident.

Name submissions that are accepted are set to be placed on a plaque and pillar in the grove, officials said.

They are scheduled to be added in time for the annual Evening of Remembrance event on Sept. 29.

The Youth Grove, which covers a half-acre of land in Central Park, is a grassroots effort supported by the City of Santa Clarita.

The grove’s pillars are arranged around a central monument encouraging safe driving, according to officials.

The grove was created to raise awareness about safe and responsible driving, and provides a place to reflect on the consequences that can result from driving under the influence, driving recklessly and distracted driving, according to City officials.

To submit a name to be added to the grove, a parent must submit a signed release form consenting to the addition of a child’s name by July 30.

For more information on the grove or for a release form, go to the Youth Grove webpage or email Tess Simgen.
