Two Santa Clarita Deputies Recognized By Local Officials In Honor Of Hispanic Heritage Month

On Wednesday two Santa Clarita deputies were recognized as Outstanding Hispanics in Law Enforcement by Assemblywoman Suzette Valladares (R-Santa Clarita).

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Deputies Carmen Gudiel and Estevan Perez were a part of a selected group of 30 outstanding Hispanics in the California 38th Assembly District, encompassing parts of the Santa Clarita, San Fernando and Simi Valleys.

The deputies were honored with certificates to mark their excellence in law enforcement in a ceremony attended by local, county and state representatives and fellow deputies from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Santa Clarita Deputies Perez and Gudiel recieved honors in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month on Wednesday.

The Santa Clarita Station is the first station Gudiel has worked at, having served in law enforcement for 9 years at men’s central jail. Perez has worked in law enforcement for 16 years, working at Lancaster Station before coming to Santa Clarita.

“It is a tough career, mentally, physically. It’s a lot of work, but I have some amazing partners that I’ve met and, and I’m really happy to be here and be with the community,” said Deputy Gudiel. “It’s a good feeling.”

“When I chose the path of law enforcement I said you know what, I’m gonna push, push, push for this,” said Perez.

Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, a time when Hispanic people in the community are recognized for their contributions to the history, culture, and achievements of the nation.

“My heritage, my culture, everything that my parents brought from their country and taught me has made me who I am today,” said Gudiel.

2021 marks the first time that the City of Santa Clarita has had Latinos representing the community at the city, state, and federal levels, in the form of Mayor Bill Miranda, Assemblywoman Suzette Valladares, and Congressman Mike Garcia.

Perez encouraged those thinking about pursuing law enforcement to do so, especially among the Hispanic community.

“I would definitely encourage people to join,” Perez said. “You get to understand that we don’t always meet people on their brightest days, and having that knowledge, culture, of where you come from, you can bear with them, understand and work with them.”

  1. Interesting, most decent people aren’t Divisive when considering the race of LE! We are happy, proud and respect all LE as One, Great Humans that Protect & Serve!

  2. Not to take anything away from these officers because I’m sure they deserve all the accolades they get but special awards for being part of the largest ethnic group in Los Angeles? Why? Are we beyond this kind of thing yet? I feel like these kinds of events only divide. Now we have entire months dedicated to ethnicities and and sexual orientation. It wasn’t that big a deal when it was just a day. Like St. Patricks day etc… Entire months though?

  3. Craig, Truthful/Honest words well spoken!
