Valencia Resident To Celebrate 100th Birthday Amidst Coronavirus Lockdown

A woman from Valencia is set to celebrate her 100th birthday on Monday as elder living facilities across the Santa Clarita Valley remain locked down due to the “Safer at Home” order.

Ruth Golby, a resident of the Frances Manor elderly living community in Valencia, has lived through a World War, seen a man land on the moon, and watched an ever-growing world become more interconnected than ever before.

However, as her 100th birthday on Monday, May 25 approaches, Ruth faces a year unlike any other: spent in lockdown in her home as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Due to COVID-19, our facility is on lockdown, meaning no friends or family will be able to visit her on this very special day,” said Eddi Provost, who serves as the administrator for Frances Manor.

Despite not being able to have her family of five children, 13 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren come to visit, officials at Frances Manor want Ruth to know just how loved she is by those around her.

“It’s not every day someone lives to turn 100 years old,” Provost said. “I have been in this business for 15 years. I have met many, many lovely elderly folks, only two have lived to be this old.”

Her daughter Kay Thatcher says that Ruth attributes her long life to “loving Jesus, living right and good cooking.”

Ruth was born on a family farm in Marlinton, West Virginia on May 25, 1920. She was the fourth of nine children. After working as a waitress for a time, she got married, and in 1958 she moved to California.

She enjoys sewing and making clothes for her children. In fact, Ruth has made eight “beautiful wedding dresses for her own daughters and other girls in her church,” according to her daughter. She also loves to quilt, and has made “countless beautiful quilts.”

Before the coronavirus pandemic struck, Ruth and her second husband John loved to travel.
