‘We Have No Excuses’: 85 Degrees Bakery In Santa Clarita Temporarily Shut-Down For Health Violations

The 85 Degrees Bakery Cafe in Santa Clarita was temporarily shut-down Thursday by order of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

The popular Taiwanese bakery – known for their coffee, tea, smoothies, baked goods and desserts – was shut down Thursday in accordance with California Health and Safety Code Section 114411.

The breach of California Health and Safety Code revealed that “serious” violations resulted in the bakery’s temporary closure and store officials later confirmed that selling expired dairy and meat products was the ultimate cause.

“As far as the reason (we were shut-down), our breads with meat, dairy or cream must be sold within four hours and we were cited for having a few breads out past that mark by around 15 to 20 minutes,” said 85 Degrees Bakery Director of Marketing Dave Lavazo. “It was our fault. We became too relaxed and we have no excuses.”

California Occupational Safety and Health Regulations categorize the type of instance as a serious violation in which “there could be a realistic possibility that death or serious physical harm could result from the hazard created by the violation.”

The 85 Degrees Bakery Cafe on 24445 Magic Mountain Parkway in Valencia, however, awaits an additional health inspection and is hopeful to reopen soon, according to Lazaro.

“We are training to be more adamant about disposing of these pastries before the four-hour mark in adherence to these health regulations,” Lavazo said. “We do not want to disappoint anyone or betray anyone’s trust. We’re working to make sure this never happens again.”

KHTS has reached out to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health for further details, but they were unavailable for comment as of Friday morning.

  1. Why isn’t LA County Health Department going after the illegal street vendors cooking on the city sidewalks in Santa Clarita? These folks store their food in ice chests. Someone is going to get very sick and it will be the fault of the City of Santa Clarita and the LA County Health Department. Both City and County Health Department are aware of the health violation the illegal food vendors pose.
