Two West Ranch High School students are collecting recyclables and donating all the income to two Santa Clarita non-profits to help those in need during the coronavirus pandemic.
Peter Suh and Jayden Barnholtz, who are both getting ready to start their senior year of high school noticed during the start of the coronavirus pandemic their neighbors who normally brought their recyclables to recycling centers started to throw them away.
“When I saw the blue bins filled with recyclables, I knew it was because of the pandemic, and that people were not going to recycling centers because people don’t want to get sick,” Suh said.
After seeing the blue recycling bins being filled up on the curbsides or recyclables gathering up on Suh’s neighbors’ yards he asked himself “why are these recyclables not getting used to help the community during these hard times?”
Growing up, Suh has always done what he could to help others who were a little less fortunate then he was.
“When I was little going to L.A. to see my dad on the weekend, I would see the homeless people lined up near the freeway, and when I had an allowance I would give it to them,” Suh said.
As a result of what Suh saw in Los Angeles when he went to visit his father, he decided one of the organizations he wanted to support is the Santa Clarita Valley Family Promise.
SCV Family Promise is a local non-profit that helps children who are dealing with homelessness.
Suh has also chosen to donate the recycling profits to Santa Clarita Single Mothers Outreach.
As of Tuesday, Suh has raised approximately $400 to be donated to the two organizations and is hoping to be able to get that number higher.
Suh is offering to provide nylon bags and pickup services for Santa Clarita residents who are interested in collecting and giving recyclables to help raise money to help those in need during these tough times.
