Senator Scott Wilk, R-Santa Clarita, announced Monday that the recently passed $536 million legislation to prevent California wildfires is “a good start but not enough.”
After the recent passing of a $536 million legislation for California fire prevention last Thursday, State Senator Scott Wilk, of the 21st Senate District, released a statement Monday expressing his dissatisfaction with the plan.
“Wildfires have affected almost every community in California – including my own. They are devastating,” Wilk said. “While I am supportive of today’s bill and glad to see my colleagues across the aisle join Republicans in calling for vegetation management to harden our forests, it is naïve to believe that this bill offers any type of long-term solution.”
Although Wilk supported the bill, he believes that it doesn’t provide “ongoing funding for desperately needed management of our forests” and lacks any mention of the regular obstacles that “have crippled wildfire mitigation efforts for years.”

The legislation is set to invest the $536 million into forestry and vegetation management, improvements in defensible space, prevention workforce training, fire prevention grants and the retrofitting of homes in high-risk areas, officials said.
The legislature was agreed upon by California Governor Gavin Newsom, Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon, and Senate President Toni Atkins.
“These are issues that should have been – and could have been – addressed today or even a decade ago,” concluded Wilk.
