22-year-old Krista Gamboa has been identified by officials with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.
Gamboa was found unconscious Sunday evening in the parking lot of the River Oaks Shopping Center near the intersection of Magic Mountain Parkway and McBean Parkway shortly before 5:30 p.m.
The woman reportedly had suffered a medical emergency in the parking lot, and was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital, where she died, according to Los Angeles County Fire Department Capt. Michael Fuentes.
While officials suspect that her death was caused by some sort of overdose, they cannot officially list a cause of death until her autopsy has been completed.
“Santa Clarita is not any different than any other city in the United States; we have a drug problem here,” said Bob Sharits, program director at The Way Out Recovery SCV. “We are maybe more affluent than a lot of other communities, and so we have more money, but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have a drug problem.”
The incident is not currently being investigated as a crime, as officials have found no evidence to suggest that any crime took place that evening.
